The Reverse Darwinism of the Democratic Party

Today’s Democratic Party has defied the theory of Charles Darwin that species naturally evolve toward greater functionality and survivability. Or at least, it seems that way, based on trends in the last couple of decades.

Just consider the Democratic presidencies since Barack Obama. It seems that every Democratic president or presidential candidate deliberately chose a vice president that was mentally deficient, presumably in order to make the president shine in comparison.

Barack Obama could not have picked a bigger dullard than Joe Biden. And that was before Biden’s apparent senility had set in. To say the guy who had been plagiarizing since law school, lying about his academic achievements and called the first black presidential candidate “clean” and “articulate” was brighter than a bowling pin is offensive to bowling pins the land over.

Then the most ethically challenged Democratic presidential candidate ever, Hillary Rodham Clinton, chose that truly weird guy from Virginia, Tim Kaine, as her running mate in 2016. If he wasn’t chosen because he was one of the few people who might make Hillary appear more appealing, I don’t know what the reason could have been. Yeah, he was weird but just wait till we get to that even weirder Tim, Tim Walz, in a minute.

So next in the Democratic presidential devolution, after Donald Trump waxed Hillary in the 2016 election, we have Bowling Pin Biden picking Kamala Harris as his Veep candidate in 2020. Biden was a vegetable, even in 2020, so maybe it was fitting that he chose a word salad chef as his running mate.

I have been following American politics since I was 12 and, 50 years later, I can safely say that I have never seen a more vapid, talentless, and truly moronic national level political candidate than Kamala Harris. It’s no wonder Biden picked her! She was the only one who could possibly make him look, well, maybe slightly presidential?

Then the Democratic Party picked – or was forced to pick for racialist/sexist reasons – Harris for its 2024 presidential nominee. They must have scoured the country for some Democratic political grandee who would not outshine Kamala, but oh, the challenge! So they went with a total fruitcake named Tim Walz, Minnesota’s governor.

This is the guy who required tampons be available in his state’s elementary school boys’ bathrooms. He’s the governor who, during the rampages in his state following the drug overdose/heart failure death of George Floyd, had National Guard troops firing paintball guns at hapless Minnesota residents who ventured outside their homes in violation of Walz’s curfews. And he’s the same governor who, during the nightmarish Stalinist response to the Covid cold, had a snitch line set up so that Minnesotans could rat out their neighbors if they saw them breaking social distancing rules.  Remember all that dictatorial insanity, which Democratic politicians seemed to love with an unnatural passion?

And don’t even get me started on Walz’s bizarro stage performances. I’d never seen a politician make so many weird hand gestures to crowds. And the strange Asiatic bows.

But the point I’m trying to illustrate is that there seems to be a trend in which the Democratic Party is defying common sense expectations that they would seek better candidates in each election cycle. Instead, they seem to be choosing less and less appealing standard-bearers.

And now we come to New York City, where I grew up. Born in Brooklyn, raised in Queens, and schooled in Manhattan, I’ve got three of the five boroughs covered.

New York had a pretty good, commonsense mayor, Ed Koch, for a long stretch. Although a Democrat, he kept the potholes filled and the snow shoveled.  He led the city from 1978 to 1989, replacing the incompetent Abe Beame. Unfortunately, Koch was succeeded by a truly awful guy, David Dinkins.

Crime soared in Dinkins’ four-year tenure, and things got so bad that liberal New Yorkers, in their desperation, chose Republican former federal prosecutor Rudy Giuliani to clean things up. And clean things up he did. Working with outstanding police commissioners, Giuliani turned New York into one of the safest cities in America. It seemed like a miracle.

Giuliani was followed by the competent Michael Bloomberg as mayor, and he kept things on an even keel, with crime remaining low and the city functioning well.

But then the Democratic devolution kicked in in New York as well. They elected the horrible, socialist Bill de Blasio as mayor, and crime began to soar once again. All the urban blight of the '70s began to return.

So, one would think that New Yorkers would improve on their choice of mayor in 2022. But no. They chose the ethically challenged Eric Adams, and nothing has improved in his three years.

What’s the solution? Devolve further! In this week’s Democratic primary, New York voters chose Zohran Mamdani, a socialist, pro-Palestinian radical nut who wants to defund the police, have government run the grocery stores, and publicly fund transgender surgeries for minors.

Maybe Democratic Party politicians are devolving because their constituencies are devolving. So, in a sense, Darwin may have been right. Democratic politicians are becoming more survivable by becoming more awful, because that’s what their voters want.
