The Border Crisis Is Biden’s Burden to Bear, and His Alone

With the expiration of Title 42, the U.S.-Mexico border is essentially a revolving door. Illegal immigrants are flooding the United States en masse, unencumbered by a Biden administration with no interest in solving the problem.

Since President Trump was in office and wisely addressed illegal immigration by introducing Title 42, the federal government has had a useful tool in its toolbox to enforce the law. Initially intended to curb COVID-19, the Trump rule enhanced border security by allowing federal officials to quickly turn away migrants crossing from Mexico. And, not surprisingly, migrant crossings dropped under the Trump administration’s watch.

But then came President Biden and his open-borders agenda. With more than 25,000 illegal immigrants already in custody, the federal government now expects as many as 10,000 daily migrant encounters due to Title 42’s expiration. That’s right: 10,000 encounters every day. Border cities and towns are rightly bracing for impact.

The numbers don’t lie, and they’re shocking. Since Biden took office, nearly six million illegal immigrants have crossed the southern border—yes, nearly six million. Due to Biden’s “catch-and-release” policies, more than two million illegal immigrants have been released in the United States, with an additional 1.3 million known “got-aways.” And those are the known ones—there could be hundreds of thousands more out there.

Yet, instead of securing the border, the Biden administration decided to end construction of a border wall mere months into his presidency. Talk about a welcoming message to send.

Even worse, Biden officials are now either ignoring the issue or denying that it exists. According to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, “Unlawful immigration is down.” (Note her refusal to say “illegal.”) Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, meanwhile, claims “the border is not open, it has not been open, and it will not be open subsequent to May 11th.”

Speaking of Mayorkas, he may very well be the worst Secretary of Homeland Security in U.S. history. The same man’s top priority is to reportedly help illegal immigrants “access lawful, safe, orderly pathways” to the United States, deflecting blame to Congress and deciding to beg illegal immigrants for compliance instead of doing his actual job. Based on his job “performance,” Mayorkas deserves nothing less than impeachment for his failure to serve the American people.

But, beyond Mayorkas’ stunning neglect for the law, more questions abound. Where is Vice President Kamala Harris, America’s supposed “border czar”? Why is the mainstream media refusing to hold her or her boss accountable? What are the next steps for the southern border post-Title 42? How will illegal immigration be handled come Thursday and beyond? Where is the accountability?

Until Americans have answers, the border crisis will go on, and it will get worse. Millions more illegal immigrants will flood the border in the months to come, long before Biden’s first (and, hopefully, only) term ends. And U.S. citizens will bear the real burden in states like Arizona and Texas, as crime and dangerous drugs inevitably flow to other parts of the country.

Like everyday Americans have always done, they will bear the daily burden of the border crisis. But, in truth, the crisis is Biden’s burden to bear politically—and his alone. The buck stops with the Biden administration, which has managed to make an existing problem historically worse in the span of just over two years.

Biden’s abject failure on the immigration issue is a major reason for his 36 percent approval rating. Nearly 60 percent of American voters disapprove of the president’s handling of the border crisis (or lack thereof), and many of them are in battleground states. Americans in swing states are fed up with the Democratic Party’s open-borders platform, and Democrats will be punished for it in 2024.

But, until Republicans can solve the problem, Americans should expect the border crisis to continue boiling over. The revolving door will keep swinging open under Biden’s watch—wider and wider by the day.
