The left has ramped up its war on Elon Musk, and it’s no surprise that his alignment with Donald Trump has drawn their ire even more. Musk has become the prime villain in their narrative, a symbol of everything they hate: free speech, free markets, and an unwavering commitment to reducing the size of a behemoth government. The latest attacks on Musk and his companies, especially Tesla, highlight a troubling and hypocritical trend.

When Musk purchased Twitter (now X), he made clear his intentions of creating a platform where free speech could thrive. This was, and is, a direct challenge to the left’s previous stranglehold on traditional and social media. For years, these outlets, which have been the de facto pulpits of progressive ideology, stifled free speech in the name of cancel culture.  Whether through their censorship, shadow banning, or outright de-platforming of those who dare express dissenting views, the left has continuously chipped away at the bedrock principle of free speech.  Musk’s decision to take over Twitter and turn it into a haven for diverse viewpoints has rattled the left, and their response has been swift and vicious.

Musk’s stance on free speech is just one of the reasons the left has made him a target; his alignment with President Trump and DOGE is an even greater affront.

Musk’s role in the fight against climate change should theoretically make him an ally to the left, yet they’ve taken to vilifying him and anything associated with him.  Tesla, of course, has been a critical player in the push for a greener, more sustainable future.  Musk built a company that challenged the automotive industry and showed the world that electric vehicles are viable and preferable in many cases.

So, what does the left do?  They go after Musk with ruthless zeal.  The attacks are now personal, political, and downright hypocritical.

Former astronaut and climate change activist Senator Mark Kelly, who, despite pushing for policies to combat climate change, recently made headlines for announcing he was “ditching” his Tesla.  Why? Because, according to Kelly, Musk is "an a-hole" for supporting Trump. It’s a clear example of how the left is letting personal politics overrule the very cause they claim to care about (specifically climate change).  If you’re truly committed to fighting global warming, shouldn’t the car you drive be secondary to the environmental benefits of driving a Tesla?

It’s rich with irony that in the same news cycle where Musk was rescuing stranded astronauts Kelly was attacking Musk. Why attack a man who is working tirelessly to save American lives and rescue astronauts from certain peril?  It makes no sense.  The reality is that “First Captain X” has boldly taken us to so many places we have never been.  Yet the left’s deranged need to silence Musk and anyone associated with him has clouded their ability to make rational, principled decisions.

It’s clear that the left’s commitment to climate change is only skin-deep and about fundraising, not principle.  If climate change were truly the existential threat that they say it is, would anyone who claims to be a champion of the environment abandon a car that reduces their carbon footprint in favor of a gas-guzzling SUV?  Of course not.  But in their blind hatred for Musk and his alignment with Trump, they’ll abandon whatever principles they claim to hold.

The left has even resorted to violence to express their disapproval.  Tesla dealerships have been targeted by vandals, with cars being burned in acts of protest.  This isn’t free speech. This is starting a fire. This is a violent attempt to silence dissent. Destroying property doesn’t make a policy argument and doesn’t create space for meaningful dialogue. The left claims to champion tolerance, yet their actions speak volumes about their true commitment to free expression. Boycotting Tesla products is one thing, but engaging in violent protest is entirely different.

Elon Musk and Donald Trump are no strangers to the derangement of their critics.  They’ve weathered attacks from every angle and continue to push forward.  Musk has shown that you can challenge the establishment, defend free speech, and even lead an innovative company while being relentlessly criticized for it.

The left’s attacks on Musk are not just personal; they are symptoms of a more significant problem in today’s political climate, namely the unwillingness to tolerate opposing viewpoints and the dangerous pursuit of silencing those who disagree.

Boycotting Musk’s products may be an exercise in free speech, but burning them is nothing short of a dangerous attack on the very freedoms they claim to hold dear.  The true test of a commitment to free speech is how one treats those it disagrees with, and right now, the left is failing that test.
