We’ve been hard on Sen. John Thune (R-SD), but that’s what happens when you can’t do your job, become a dithering mess, and, frankly, turn into the Democrats' punching bag. Thune got taken in the DHS funding fight, thinking Democrats were capable or willing to make a deal: their base wants ICE defunded, and they liked that DHS was shut down. They had no reason to reopen it. But it’s what Thune said on Hannity last night, where I caught a glimpse of Armageddon.

Thune read off his talking points about how the talking filibuster will stall progress, how parts of the SAVE America Act can be passed through reconciliation, and how there have been multiple votes on sections of the bill, but they keep getting blocked by Democrats.

Hey, John, here’s an idea: eliminate the filibuster. I don’t think Republicans understand how important this bill is. It’s almost as essential as funding the border wall, which President Trump was screwed from securing those initial funds by congressional Republicans. Building the wall was never really an option for Trump—he had to get it done. It was a key campaign promise—so is passing the SAVE America Act.

Nuking the filibuster not only clears the way to pass the SAVE America Act but also unlocks a bunch of other initiatives where we no longer need to worry about 60 votes. I don’t want to hear that when we lose power, we’ll rue the day. No, we’ll do that if we dither; not removing it is going to be trashed soon. Democrats have already made that known. I’d rather we pass our agenda first, as Democrats won’t have the votes to repeal anything we pass. Our elections will have a strong foundation in security; the days of Democrats cheating will be over, and that’s a massive win for the American people. It’s also what we voted for.

This deference to tradition is undermining the party. It’s becoming the stale, tired way of thinking. When one side shows you their hand, you should act on it, not just twiddle your thumbs hoping that voters will see your stance on tradition as a noble trait worthy of political reward. You gain that by winning, not by doing the bare minimum and hoping for a moral victory; that’s still losing. Winning is the only currency the base wants to trade with, not "oh gee, well we tried." Thune should threaten the gavels of those blocking the Trump agenda, cut off campaign funds, and most importantly, fire the Senate parliamentarian who is a former Harry Reid aide.

Our people should be in there. Period.

Thune, in a segment with Hannity, said there are about 20 Republicans opposed to nuking the filibuster. Who are they? The Panican scum that infests our ranks will forever derail what we want to get done, especially when Democrats will nuke the filibuster. They’re sucking the enthusiasm out of the base with this boring, silly, institutional deferential crap.

I’m tired, boss. And if you don’t have the guts to get it done, we’ll find people who will.
