Beyond Appeasement: Why the Abraham Accords Must Expand Now

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, the Prime Minister of Britain, Sir Keir Rodney Starmer, and the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, appear to have been awarded the Islamist equivalent of the Neville Chamberlain Prize for Appeasement and Cowardice. Hamas thanked them for threatening Israel with sanctions if it continued its military operation to force the Gaza-based terrorist groups to free the hostages it seized on October 7, 2023, lay down their arms, and finally leave Gaza.

That this Trio of Travesty is led by none other than La France, which to this day still clings to remnants of the empire that Paris conquered, oppressed, and exploited for years, is the ultimate irony. Not to mention the fact that the French collaborationist pro-Nazi Vichy regime was actively and enthusiastically involved in rounding up Jews and shipping them off to death camps – all of which is now little more than blood under the bridge.

Macron, the self-styled defender of human rights, recently hosted the ruler of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, at the Elysee Palace. Mr. el-Sharaa, until the Fall of 2024, was the Amir (commander) of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the al Qaeda spinoff based in Idlib and Aleppo. That makes Al-Sharaa the first Al Qaeda grad to become a head of state since the Taliban in Afghanistan maintained a distinct identity from al Qaeda. While the French toasted the Islamist ruler of Damascus, his militias slaughtered Druze and Alawites back home. At the same time, Macron spilled barrels of vitriol on the democratically elected (albeit quite imperfect) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

What’s important to Mr. Macron now is to cover up his unpopularity and powerlessness at home, pander to France’s growing Muslim population, and please his wealthy friends in Qatar. To do so, he’s willing to peddle the same tired “two-state solution” that has failed Israel and the people of Gaza and the West Bank repeatedly at the expense of everyone in the region and poured hundreds of millions of international aid dollars down the black hole of the terror tunnel network that the super-rich Hamas bosses built.

As for Mr. Carney, he must want to get back at U.S. President Donald Trump for suggesting that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state. The anti-Israel initiative being pushed by him and Messrs. Macron and Starmer flies directly in the face of the Abraham Accords, a part of Trump’s potentially historic legacy that has only begun to be developed. Mr. Starmer, also struggling with unpopularity and political pressure at home, would likely prefer to keep the conversation about the Middle East rather than about how badly his new administration seems to be doing. Israel, as always, is a convenient scapegoat in these scenarios.

Despite France’s heated “determination” to recognize a Palestinian state in collaboration with Saudi Arabia, this is about the last thing the region needs. What the U.S. and the forces of moderation would most benefit from is the expansion of the Abraham Accords, which have proven their viability, and a multinational transitional authority composed of a coalition of those willing to take control of the Gaza Strip. That force can supervise Hamas’ disarmament and evacuation out of Gaza and get to the vital business of deradicalizing the population through the provision of actual education rather than the hateful swill that the UN Relief and Work Agency for Palestine (UNRWA) schools have been dishing out. Such an authority, led by a contact group including the UAE, Israel, U.S., possibly Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, should establish fiscal transparency so that international donors and eventually private investors can be confident their funds are going to construction and not to terrorists and swindlers. The authority must also work to organize and provide employment, civic governance, healthcare, education, and security.

The UN has thoroughly discredited itself with UNRWA’s obvious embrace of terrorists and their agenda serving as a case in point. The Abraham Accords bear no such shameful stain. The U.S., Israel, the moderate Arab countries, and others willing to step up, either as members of the Accords or in an associate capacity, could literally work a miracle in Gaza.  They could turn what Hamas made a hellscape into a shining jewel. However, Macron has zero interest in that. He just wants to be on stage, making speeches, and participating in photo ops – all the while leaving someone else (read: the United States and Israel) to pay for the mess left behind.

The Trump team should be on the alert. Macron, Starmer, Carney et al. are about to shoot the U.S. administration’s Middle East policy in the foot, or worse. Now is the time to operationalize a plan to upstage the three men before the June “Palestinian state” recognition event in New York brings irreparable damage by giving the terrorists and their fellow travelers what they really seek: international legitimacy for the struggle to eradicate Israel and undermine America.

An announcement regarding the expansion of the Abraham Accords prior to next month’s UN conference in New York would help mitigate the overly dramatic display of “humanitarian concern,” virtue signaling, and moral superiority that will likely be showcased to advance the short-term political agendas of the Triad – all politicians with little integrity and dangerously oversized egos.
