Reporting on the Mirror – PULITZER PRIZE COMMITTEE

  • Did you all forget you are supposed to reward great journalism?!

This year’s Pulitzer Prizes have been awarded, and it appears clear there is no intent to see that they encourage solid and proper journalism. For starters, there was not a single instance in the nominations of anyone reporting on President Biden’s condition. But the real trouble is seen in the top award, given for Distinguished Community Service. This would be the same category where they awarded The New York Times and Washington Post for their coverage of the since disproven Russian collusion hoax.

This was not any better. ProPublica was recognized for its series of stories on women imperiled, with some losing their lives, due to the new stringent abortion laws in many states. These were reports that have long been shown to be deeply flawed.

In nearly all instances, they covered women who suffered gravely after miscarriages (not something affected by the laws) and in the highlighted case of a Georgia woman, it was when she had already had the abortion and there was a delay in her being treated for the after-effects. There was light mention that all of these laws specifically say women should, of course, be treated if their lives are endangered, and they also had to admit they were not able to determine that the women were not treated out of fear of the law. But this did not stop the reporting from making the claims, and it did not cause the Pulitzer committee to pause and analyze these details further.

Pre-Written Field Reports – ABC 6 PHILADELPHIA

  • When an interviewer already had the answers written down.

There was a troubling incident that played out this weekend when a video emerged of a bar in Philadelphia operated by the Barstool Sports empire that showed a waitress bringing a sign to a table with antisemitic wording and some of the patrons then chanting offensively in response.

Barstool CEO Dave Portnoy saw this and immediately took action, firing employees and then announcing he would be trying to educate those customers involved in a rather magnanimous fashion. (There is full coverage of this and his reactions at our sister site, Twitchy.)

As a follow-up to this, Portnoy had been receiving a flood of media requests and he accepted one from a local ABC affiliate in Philadelphia. Things did not go well, and Portnoy — who has a record of calling out the slanted press — became more inflamed.

As Portnoy described it, he agreed to be interviewed by one reporter, but when the video meeting took place, it was another reporter, and this one was very accusatory and combative. He provided a portion of their exchange. (Word of warning: there is plenty of profanity.)

This reporter attempted to blame this antisemitism on the culture of Barstool Sports and even cited quotes from a supposed expert blaming the site. This is rather ignorant, considering Portnoy is Jewish, as well as the very quick action he took when he found out about this incident.

When Portnoy challenged this reporter’s claims by asking who this expert was and what their credentials were, the reporter became intemperate, and as Portnoy tried to have a discussion and ask questions himself, the reporter declared that she was the journalist and only she was permitted to ask questions. That set off Dave, and he cut off the interview right there.

To see the level of elitism on display this account gave a transcript, showing the level of contempt this “journalist” displayed.

Race to the Bottom – UNIVISION

  • Now who is making prejudicial comments?!

At the Spanish language news outlet, they detailed, in mournful fashion, that in select cities on Monday, planned parades and events for Cinco de Mayo had been canceled. This was said to be a result of the ongoing deportation efforts by the Trump administration. The reasoning was that there were fears that the gatherings would lead to potential ICE raids.

Questions abound. For starters, is this an indication that there was information leaked these raids could take place? But more troubling is the position being taken that just because Hispanic people are gathering together this would involve illegal immigrants. We have been told that it is a racist position to hold that any Hispanics are considered illegal, yet here were authorities and organizers making that very conclusion.

Gilded Reframe – MSNBC

  • Kind of makes you want to question turning to him for advice, does it not?

On “Morning Joe,” there was a dose of awkwardness served up when a retraction, of sorts, was made live on the air. Turning to co-host Jonathan Lemire he had to walk back some comments that had been made on the show last Friday. Frequent guest and former FBI agent Frank Figliuzzi had been on and stated plainly that new FBI Director Kash Patel was hardly seen much in the headquarters and was instead spending most of his time out in Las Vegas and frequenting nightclubs.

Lemire sheepishly said that his network has not been able to confirm this in a very brief retraction, one that has all the pounds of “Please don’t sue us for defamation…again.”

News Avoidance Syndrome – VARIOUS OUTLETS

  • This sounds like rather good news, which means it is unlikely to make the news.

One constant in the past decades of global climate emergency environmental warming change is that whatever is being detailed is assured to ONLY deliver dire results. Nothing seen as a positive side effect is ever considered, and the last thing that is acceptable is anything approaching good news on the environmental front.

Case in point, it has been discovered that in Antarctica record level of sea ice has formed. This, according to science researchers – who we have been told to listen to on such matters. We await to see if CNN’s Bill Weir will be reporting on such, given just last week he was accusing President Trump of locking us all in a metaphorical burning theater.
