The Day of American Atonement

The indictment of James Comey should be the beginning of legal action taken against powerful individuals who abused their positions.

Rabbi Dr. Avraham Twersky once mused that if Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, occurred once every 50 years, a person who was alive when the day arrived would feel awfully lucky: he can clean out his closet of bad behavior, something that would not have been possible had he passed away just a year earlier. As it is, Yom Kippur comes every year, and I still marvel that my public school in the Chicago suburbs had the day as an official holiday. The fact that God gave the Jews Yom Kippur for atonement means two things: we do sin as per Torah law, and God in His infinite mercy allows us to find a way back to being better people. Fasting is the outward, well-known side of Yom Kippur. The 12 hours of intense prayers is the engine that runs the day.

Just as an individual needs atonement, so does a body politic. The recent indictment of Comey is a good start in that direction. A cynic would say that his indictment and the recent rummaging of the FBI through John Bolton’s boxers are simply payback for the way Donald Trump and his associates were treated. And if one lived his life without his glasses on, yes, the outward actions do seem very similar: federal intrusion followed by a real risk of losing one’s freedom during incarceration. The difference is in the details. Donald Trump and his friends were harassed, indicted, and even prosecuted and jailed as a form of political retribution. Had Donald Trump retired to play golf and build tall buildings, none of the cases brought against him would have been invented. The fact that the legal cases brought against Trump either collapsed or were thrown out is proof that they were built on sand for political and not legal reasons. The same cannot be said of Comey and his fellow criminal bureaucrats and politicians. Adam Schiff might think about looking for a second citizenship.

During Comey’s tenure at the FBI, he willingly passed along secret notes from his meetings with Donald Trump. These memos found their way into The New York Times. He started the Crossfire Hurricane investigation, though there was no intelligence actually linking Donald Trump to Vladimir Putin and the Russians. Comey began with a goal—remove or seriously weaken Trump—and then worked backwards in order to achieve it. Sidelining General Flynn was a key step, as he was the one veteran Trump appointee who could have seen what Comey and his band of criminals were up to. The recent revelation that no less than 274 FBI agents—under Christopher Wray—were in the J6 crowd is further confirmation that the FBI gave up crime fighting and focused its efforts on destroying Donald Trump and the millions of America-loving patriots who voted for him.

But the Comey indictment should be the first of many. We know that Hilary Clinton intentionally used a homebrew server and destroyed over 30,000 emails subject to a congressional subpoena and then had that Rodham-Clinton nerve to say that they were nothing, just emails about her mother’s funeral arrangements and yoga classes. The crimes committed by the self-appointed elite were the outcome of their hubris, of their believing that the rightness of their cause justified any illegality, lie, or corruption. Neither the Clintons nor Bidens had any misgivings about vacuuming up money for themselves in exchange for the services of the federal government. The laptop, emails, and witnesses like Hunter Biden’s former business partners make it clear that the “Big Guy” used his position as the elected vice president of the United States to get foreign players to cough up millions for his attention and assistance. They remind me of the Hamas terrorist who murdered Israeli parents and sat in front of the wounded and frightened children and ate from the family’s food. Neither Hunter nor his auto-pen father tossed or turned over the conflict of interest or self-enrichment on the back of the American public. No, like the terrorist, they felt perfectly entitled to enjoy the spoils of their position.

Over at the NIH, Francis Collins and Tony Fauci felt no pain as they bullied colleagues to accept the “natural source” view of Covid, though many smart researchers saw that the RNA was engineered. They sold the American people lies about distancing, masks, and school closings. Fauci could sit with wife and friends at a Nationals game, while everyone else in Washington had to hunker down in his or her home, under penalty of fine or jail for going to church or convening a school classroom. They exchanged with their cabal emails via primate accounts and intentionally misspelled words so that Freedom of Information (FOI) requests would not flag their conversations. Like Comey, they abused the trust of the American people and used their offices for their own purposes and self-aggrandizement. Mini-Fauci bellowed that he is SCIENCE. I hope that he will come to realize in a jail cell that he is science fiction.

Rabbi Yosef B. Soloveichik once described Jewish law as being a hedge and not an iron wall. If one wants to trample the hedge, he certainly can do so. Positions of power are the same. Pete Hegseth could send a general that he does not like to man some radar installation near the North Pole. But he and the other Trump appointees are aware of the sacred trust given by the American people to the country’s leaders to do their job. I am sure that Donald Trump could use the presidency to get foreign leaders to direct their business to his family’s building empire. I have never heard that he has done so. Had any of the Trump children done a tenth of the illegal shenanigans of Biden’s wayward son, there would not have been enough paper on Earth for the liberal press to cover the story. There is a story in the Talmud of the passing of a big rabbi. His students asked him to bless them before he died. “May you fear God as much as you fear man.” They were horribly disappointed. “Is that all?” He told them, “When a person goes off to commit a crime, he looks in all directions to make sure that no man sees him.” Fauci, Comey, Biden, Clinton and many others had no fear of God. When they were alone in their luxurious offices, they felt that they could do whatever they wanted, even if the law said otherwise. The U.S. needs an accounting, not as an act of revenge, but rather as an act of cathartic rebalance. The people need to know that the elites are no less accountable than the schlub who got a ticket for parking in a loading zone.

When I was at the CDC many years ago, my partner and I went out with our hosts. There was a kosher pizzeria in Atlanta and we ate there. When the bill came, I pulled out my wallet to pay, but the lab head told me that she cannot allow me to pay for her meal, as she is a federal employee and it would be a violation of CDC rules. She covered the bill. I was impressed with her honesty and dedication to service. I imagine most federal employees are like her. The garbage at the top needs to be held accountable. Save some room in Comey’s cell; more must be coming.
