The devastating presentation by Tulsi Gabbard confirms what many people had suspected.
I had a quirky senior year high school English teacher. He was the only Ph.D. I had as an instructor before I got to college. He was extremely bright and quite demanding, a trait for which I am most grateful today. One day, much to the surprise of everybody, he said that he used to write material for the Second City comedy group. He brought with him a record of one of his skits and a record player. The setting is the Art Institute of Chicago. A tour guide (Alan Arkin) stops by a particularly famous painting and begins to explain its key features and historical importance. An impatient tourist comments, “I don’t like it.” Without losing a beat, the tour guide responds indignantly, “You’re wrong.”
That little exchange could explain much of Western politics during the past 20 years. When the people of the United States shocked the world and chose Donald Trump to be president in 2016, those on the left collectively sighed, “You’re wrong.” They did not accept the outcome of the election. They did not promise to be a loyal opposition. Rather, they decided that the people were wrong and that a new outcome was in order. This attitude was not only with Donald Trump. In England, Brexit is all but dead. In Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro is wearing an ankle bracelet and must be home between 7 pm and 7 am. Romania threw out its vote when a right-leaning candidate was in the lead; they arrested him and made for new elections and surprise, surprise, the lefty candidate won. Wherever the non-left candidate or outcome won, the result was made null and void by those on the left still holding onto power.
In the case of Gabbard’s revelations, Barack Obama decided that intelligence showing negligible Russian activity during the 2016 election was unacceptable. He and his extremely agreeable aides plotted to make a Russian collusion case to prevent Donald Trump from effectively governing as president. The first task was to get rid of General Michael Flynn, the only member of the Trump team who could have figured out the machinations of the FBI and White House against the new president. Once he was sidelined, we were treated to wild claims that Donald Trump was a Russian asset and that the crazy stories of the Clinton-funded Steele Dossier needed to be taken with great seriousness. They invented a case out of thin air, because they refused to accept that Hilary Clinton lost. She had to win so as to continue the Obama project of transforming America into something unrecognizable.

The underlying character trait in all of the cases of working against nationalist candidates and causes is hubris. The “elite” by birth, education, wealth or supposed brains can look at an outcome and declare it null and void because it goes against their views and values. Their approach is as dumb as if the Yankees lost to the basement-dwelling A’s and then indignantly declared the game null and void and that the 9-3 loss must immediately be adjusted to a 10-0 Yankees victory. Unfortunately with Obama, the outcome of his maneuvering was far more insidious than changing a ballgame score. President Trump was impeached. He could not focus on running the country. Millions were wasted on the Russian Collusion probe and doubt was raised by Clinton and others as to the legitimacy of the Trump White House. The most important damage resulting from the actions of Obama and his cabal was the prevention of the US and Russia strengthening ties in order to isolate and weaken China. It would have been a reverse-Nixon, with President Trump pulling President Putin closer to the US and further away from communist China. Trump could not talk extensively with Putin because of the lies put in play by the deceitful outgoing president and his gang of destroyers. The damage they made cannot be calculated and anyone who denied shenanigans in the 2020 elections might want to rethink his position in light of how far Democrats went in 2016 in order to prevent a nationalist like Trump from governing after winning.
I remember when Bill Clinton defeated Bob Dole in the 1996 election. Dole, who was a World War II veteran and stalwart of the Senate, jokingly said that he woke up and for the first time in his life found himself unemployed. He never suggested an insurrection or that the outcome was rigged. He accepted the result and moved on personally and as the then leader of the Republican Party. Obama liked to say that elections have consequences, but that statement is only true if you let them have consequences. If you are like that nudnik kid you grew up with who after every turn in a game demands to throw the dice again because he didn’t like the outcome, then only elections that you win have consequences. One cannot appreciate how important it was for Donald Trump to win the 2024 election by margins that prevented any claims of election fraud. If he had lost the popular vote and won the electoral college by a handful of electors, we would have had months of complaining that the Republicans cheated and that a few votes here and a couple over there, and voila, President Kamala! Fortunately he won by numbers that even left Obama, Pelosi and their friends in their mansions with no way to undo the numbers.
When Donald Trump was president in 2016, he had very little support in Congress. Paul Ryan and John McCain felt closer to Democrats than to the MAGA inhabitant of the White House. Combine the Russian probe with very little Congressional enthusiasm and President Trump could get very little done. A few weeks ago, the president was able to ram through his signature bill by a very small margin in the House and a VP tie-breaker in the Senate. This is progress—the progress that Barack Obama and his people did not want to see happen in the US. If the trend continues to the point where a MAGA president has reliable majorities in both houses, a lot can get fixed in the US. Obama tried to prevent this trajectory but he forgot about the will of We the People.
Elites on either side of the Atlantic think that they can control the masses through their position and power. They fail to recall that elections still give people that one shot to upset the system. The French arrested Marine LePen because they don’t want a result like in the US. They can try but in the end people want their countries to be safe and to work for them. They can push off nationalism but they can’t make it go away. People want a better future for themselves, their families and their fellow citizens. The elite might want to look for a new line of work.
