About 56,000 federal workers who live in Michigan might miss their next paycheck because of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s shutdown, according to the White House.

Americans for Prosperity–Michigan called on Michigan’s Democrat Senators Elissa Slotkin and Gary Peters to reopen the federal government.

Recent AFP polling shows that 61% of Americans agree that shutdowns are bad for Congress’s ability to help the country succeed.

AFP-MI State Director Tim Golding called on Michigan Senators Elissa Slotkin and Gary Peters to vote to reopen the government.

“Senators Slotkin and Peters need to stop playing Washington games and start putting Michigan families first. Their shutdown gambit completely ignores the needs of Michiganders, many of whom are already feeling the impact of this government shutdown. Approximately 56,000 federal employees reside in Michigan and may be furloughed or miss their next paycheck. Federally funded infrastructure projects are at risk of stalling, and recipients of public benefits could experience service disruptions."

Golding called on the lawmakers to reopen the government.

About 10,600 Michigan residents who receive Social Security benefits by check instead of direct-deposit might get paid late, according to the White House.

“To vote for a clean continuing resolution is not an ideological choice. It is the responsible path forward for Senators who are accountable to their constituents. Michigan families and businesses will end up paying for the partisan actions of Slotkin and Peters. Republican or Democrat, it is time to act on behalf of the Michiganders they were elected to represent and vote for the clean continuing resolution.”

The shutdown of the federal government will hurt real people U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson told media.

"WOAH: Speaker Mike Johnson just got HEATED about the Schumer Shutdown.

He even cut himself off and realized how fired up he was.

"I'm sorry. I'm aggravated." "The people who are supposed to be protected are being completely CHEATED by Democrats in the senate!" "They HATE Donald Trump! They have Trump Derangement Syndrome! It's very real!"

As recently as seven months ago, Schumer didn't want to shut down the government, Johnson said.

“We’re not asking the Democrats to do anything heroic," Johson said. "We’re asking them to do their basic duty and responsibility… The first responsibility of the government is to protect the people, and the people who are supposed to be protected are being completely cheated by Democrats in the Senate because they want to play politics,” Johnson said.

“They have another chance today to reopen the government, and we’ll see if they do the right thing. I pray that they do because real people are being affected by the games here, and they’re sick of it.”
