Congressional Democrats are facing unprecedented voter backlash, with their job approval ratings sinking to historic lows. Only about one in five voters now express any confidence in their leadership, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction not just among independents and Republicans, but even within their own party. Political experts describe the situation as “flat out terrible,” signaling deep trouble for Democrats as they head into the 2026 midterm elections.
According to a new Quinnipiac University poll, fewer than two in 10 Americans are happy with their work on Capitol Hill, and only 19 percent of registered voters approve of the way Democrats in Congress are handling their job. Seventy-two disapprove of this. This is the lowest rating ever recorded by the pollster for Congressional Democrats, which first began asking the question in 2009, 16 years ago.
Among Democratic voters, a majority, 52 percent, disapprove of congressional Democrats, with only 39 percent satisfied. On the contrary, one-third of voters, 33 percent, approve of the way Republicans in Congress are handling their job, while 62 percent disapprove.
"If the approval numbers for Republicans are bad … then the approval numbers for Democrats can be characterized as flat out terrible,” Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy said.
Meanwhile, 77 percent of Republican voters approve of how GOP members have performed in Congress, with only 20 percent expressing disapproval.
