Memorial Day: a day where Americans honor and mourn the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ way of honoring U.S. soldiers? By taking the day to memorialize George Floyd’s death.
Saturday marked the fourth anniversary of the death of Floyd, which caused chaos and mayhem across the country as rioters destroyed cities and businesses.
However, Biden issued a statement saying that Floyd should still be alive today despite resisting arrest and having a copious amount of fentanyl in his system at the time of his death.
“George Floyd should be alive. He deserved so much more,” Biden wrote in a social media post. “Today, I join all those who loved him and all those touched by the civil rights movement he inspired in remembering the tragedy and injustice of his death. He changed the world. Now, let’s act in his memory.”

In a White House press statement, Biden echoed the words of Floyd’s daughter, who claimed that “Daddy changed the world.”
His murder shook the conscience of our nation and reminded us that our country has never fully lived up to its highest ideal of fair and impartial justice for all under the law. What we witnessed as a result was one of the largest modern civil rights movements in our Nation’s history, with people from every background marching together against racism and systemic injustice.
As we mark this solemn day tomorrow, we join George Floyd’s family in remembering his life and his legacy. We are vigilant of Black and brown communities who all too often have borne the brunt of injustice; and we recommit ourselves to honoring George Floyd’s legacy by ensuring our Nation lives up to its founding ideal that we are all created equal and deserve to be treated equally throughout our lives. In a separate post, Harris touted her administration’s “progress” in “building a justice system that lives up to its name.”
“To honor his memory, President Biden and I reaffirm our commitment to building a justice system that lives up to its name,” Harris wrote. “While we have made progress, we still have more work to do — including passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.”
