Maxine Waters Sounds Like She May Be Changing Her Tune on Violence in LA, but It's Not Any Better

As Townhall has been covering for almost a week now, Democrats in California have had quite the horrific response to the Los Angeles riots. It's not merely state and local leaders, though LA Mayor Karen Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom have been acting in a particularly abominable manner. Members of Congress, such as Rep. Maxine Waters, who represents the state's 43rd Congressional District, which includes parts of LA, has gone for some particularly unhinged behavior and comments. She's still talking, and she's not coming off any better.

To recap, Waters tried to enter an ICE detention center and had the door literally shut in her face, something that seems to be a habit for her as she seeks to exploit federal agencies as well. During a Tuesday press conference, she even had the audacity to claim that there had been no violence. Her insistence was as condescending as it was false. In his comments about her claims, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) offered a response of of "bless her heart."

As we summarized not long after her remarks:

"And even those who were out of step with what we are advocating, peaceful protests, did not create any violence! Nobody was shot, nobody was killed, get it in your head! And so, when martial law is called, what are you going to say? 'I missed the point!' Don't miss the point, you all," Waters said with a straight face. She only doubled down further from there.

"Don't think that somehow, because they called out the National Guard, that there was violence," Waters continued to insist, wagging her finger for emphasis. "There was no violence, I was on the street, I know! And I went from downtown detention back out into the community, talking to people. What happened in Paramount, what happened in Compton, what happened in Inglewood. So, first of all, get it straight, and don't just rely on what you have been told or the few incidents that you saw," Waters amazingly said as she continued with her lecture.

Not long after, however, Waters was willing to speak about violence, she made it about President Donald Trump.

"He started this!" Waters complained about Trump. "There should be no violence! He should not continue to support violence. They should not be, uh, edged on, and, you know, provoked! And anyway, and that's what the president of the United States is doing to exert his power and to show that he's in charge and to show that he's going to get the numbers he promised to get, to get people deported."

Is this because Waters has perhaps had a change of heart when it comes to lying about the riots? Almost certainly not. One very likely can't expect her to be consistent on this. She's going with the narrative that fits her and her party best. On Tuesday that turned out to be claiming that there was no violence. On Wednesday, that ended up being any violence that was caused was Trump's fault, rather than far-left agitators who have been anti-ICE and anti-American as well as pro-illegal immigrant and pro-terrorist

This is almost worse in a way, as while Waters does touch upon the violence, she is taking advantage of it and the violence that law enforcement officers have faced for her own political purposes in going after the president.

When it comes to deportations, ICE agents were targeting violent criminal illegal aliens, as Fox News' Bill Melugin highlighted over X. Further, not only is the truth not on Waters' side, but the American people support these deportations and most recognize that those being targeted for them are violent criminals. Although the CBS News poll showing as much was conducted before the riots, it still gains further significance in that it was released that same weekend.

But speaking of "the numbers he promised," not only is it worth reminding that Trump campaigned on immigration for his presidential elections, but it was a particularly winning issue for him with the 2024 campaign, whether he was running against then President Joe Biden or then Vice President Kamala Harris. Immigration has been and remains his best issue, with CNN's Harry Enten emphasizing his improvement, as well as Trump and Republicans' improvement with legal immigrant communities.

The Biden-Harris administration let in so many illegal immigrants thanks to their system of open borders that the Trump administration would have to have even more deportations to balance it out, as Ann Coulter reminded in Wednesday's column published with Townhall

But again, Waters isn't the only one behaving in such a horrific matter. Newsom has also inserted himself into national politics, especially if he actually does run for president in 2028. In more immediate news, however, Newsom has sued the Trump administration over sending in the National Guard. Although he had a temporary win he was quick to celebrate from Thursday night, an appeals court very quickly overturned that, setting a hearing for June 17.

Unbelievably, Democrats are trying to spin the use of the National Guard in a negative light, but for Trump. "Trump Sending National Guard and Military Personnel to LA Against the Wishes of Local Authorities Faces Swift Backlash," claimed a headline from the DNC War Room on Tuesday.

The American people can very likely see through this. The midterms are still a long way off from now, but if Democrats keep this up, Republicans may actually be able to hang onto their majorities.
