What in the World Is Going on With Haley Stevens

Haley Stevens, the Democrat who is attempting to keep the utterly insane radical Abdul El-Sayed from winning their party’s nomination for the U.S. Senate race in Michigan, is nothing short of an oddball.

I mean, the first clip feels like something straight out of VEEP or Parks and Rec. What’s worse is that Stevens is putting on a bit. Campaign ads from nearly a decade ago made her seem like a pretty normal liberal Midwesterner, not a weird caricature written up by someone for a comedy sketch.

Politics always attracts this idea of playing a character to help sway voters. How many times are we shown photos of Texas politicians like James Talarico or John Cornyn parading around in western boots and cowboy hats in hopes of gaining a couple of votes? Most people recognize that it’s inauthentic, but at least it isn’t flat out weird.

And the Democrat party is chock full of these guys. Remember Marianne Williamson from the 2020 Democrat primaries? That was one of the most fun campaigns in living memory. Unfortunately for Michigan Democrats, it was fun to watch because there were at least a few viable alternatives to her for them to actually support.

Instead, voters will choose between the wacky Stevens or the Mamdani-adjacent El-Sayed (and it’s not as if Stevens isn’t pretty far left herself). I can almost guarantee, as a native Midwesterner myself, that the bumpkin schtick isn’t gonna get her across the finish line. It’s fairly interesting how they couldn’t manage to recruit a clean cut, competent(ish) candidate for one of the most important races in the country, but here we are.

Thanks anyway, Stevens. Sometimes we need a good laugh to break up the string of infuriating statements and idiotic decisions by activist judges. It’s too bad that your voters are going to vote for the “abolish prisons” guy instead. Here's hoping that Mike Rodgers can pull off the win in November.
