New Gallup numbers reveal a significant blow to the Democratic Party’s standing with the American public, as its favorability rating sinks to a record low. Just 34 percent of Americans now have a favorable view of the party—its worst performance since Gallup began tracking the metric over three decades ago.
This plunge comes on the heels of the 2024 election cycle and reflects growing frustration with the left’s leadership and priorities. The previous low point, 36 percent, came in 2014, but this year’s drop is even more severe, pointing to deeper cracks in the party’s image and public trust. While the Republican Party isn’t seeing overwhelming approval either, it still edges out the Democrats in Gallup’s latest survey, clocking in at a 38 percent favorability rating, four points higher than their rivals.
What should really concern Democrat strategists, though, is the loss of enthusiasm within their own base. Only 73 percent of Democrats currently view their party favorably, a sharp drop from the 87 percent recorded just after the 2024 elections. Meanwhile, the GOP maintains strong internal support, with 91 percent of Republicans standing firmly behind their party. That gap in loyalty could spell real problems heading into midterms.
Meanwhile, the discontent among Independents is only deepening. Only 27 percent have a favorable view of the Democratic Party, tying a previous record low and highlighting the party’s growing struggle to connect with anyone outside its core base. Gallup isn’t alone in highlighting the Democrats’ sinking favorability. A recent Wall Street Journal poll paints an equally bleak picture: 63 percent of voters see the Democratic Party unfavorably, while just 33 percent view it in a positive light—the lowest favorability figure for Democrats in the past 30 years.
Trust in the Democratic Party appears to be eroding for several reasons, many of which stem from dissatisfaction with both policy outcomes and the party’s broader cultural agenda.
Under Democratic leadership, Americans have faced inflation, rising interest rates, and the high cost of living that continues to strain American communities. Record-high illegal crossings, overwhelmed border towns, and the strain on public services have also caused many to question the Democrats’ commitment to national security. In addition, public safety and crime have also damaged the Democratic Party's image, mainly in major cities run by progressive Democrats.
