Mexico's President Just Broke Her Silence About Trump's 'Gulf of America' Remarks

In remarks on Tuesday, President-elect Donald Trump revealed that he plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America when he takes office, which Townhall covered.

“Mexico’s really in trouble. A lot of trouble. Very dangerous place. And, we’re going ot be announcing a future date pretty soon…we do most of the work there…we’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring…covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name,” Trump said on Tuesday. “And it’s appropriate.”

Trump noted that this is the opposite of President Joe Biden’s approach.

On Wednesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to Trump’s remarks.

“I mean obviously, ‘Gulf of Mexico,’ the name is recognized by the United Nations,” she said in Spanish. She displayed a map showing control of North American territories, on which parts of the contemporary United States were labeled with the name “America Mexicana,” according to POLITICO.

“Why don’t we call it Mexican America?” she asked sarcastically in Spanish. “It sounds nice, no?”

“Because I know I will be asked, I think that yesterday, President Trump was misinformed, with all due respect to President Trump. Because I believe they informed him that in Mexico, Felipe Calderón was still governing, and García Luna,” Sheinbaum added.
