Republicans Have Taken the Lead in Voter Registration in This Florida County

In recent months, some Florida counties that historically voted for Democrats have flipped to have more voters registered as Republicans. One of these was Hillsborough County, which flipped red by voter registration.

That’s not all. This week, a blue county that sided with Trump now officially has more registered Republicans than Democrats.

The county in question is Miami-Dade County.

According to Florida Voice News, this solidifies the GOP leads in 59 of the Sunshine State’s 67 counties (via FL Voice News):

As of Monday morning, Miami-Dade is home to 464,370 Republicans and 440,790 Democrats.

Including “no party affiliation” and minor parties, the “other” category totals 460,783 voters – more than Democrats.

Miami-Dade’s development, paired with other voter roll maintenance, nearly propelled state Republicans to a lead statewide of 1.3 million voters; that statistic now rests at 1.29 million.

Late last year, it was reported that President Donald Trump was the first Republican to win Miami-Dade County since 1998. The county has historically leaned Democratic.

“Miami-Dade County has completed its off-year voter roll maintenance, and this morning, it shed 172,747 voters from its active rolls,” said Decision Desk HQ’s director of data science, Michael Pruser, in a published statement.

“The change netted Republicans more than 38,000 voters compared to Democrats, and the county has now flipped to Republican by registration. Today marks Republicans’ first-ever lead in voter registration in Miami-Dade,” Pruser added.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis reacted to the news.

“A decade ago Miami-Dade county was a deep blue county with hundreds of thousands more registered Democrats than Republicans,” said Gov. Ron DeSantis. “Today, the county — with more than 2.8 million people — has a Republican voter registration advantage. Nobody would have predicted this ten years ago.”
