Do Americans Support Limits on Abortion? Here's What a New Poll Shows

Friday, Jan. 24 marks the annual March for Life, where thousands of pro-life supporters descend on Washington, D.C. to push lawmakers to enact laws to protect the unborn.

This year, Vice President JD Vance was announced as a speaker at the event. This is one of his first public events as vice president, as he took office on Monday.

A new poll released days ahead of the annual march shows how the majority of Americans feel about restrictions on abortion.

The new Marist/Knights of Columbus nationwide poll confirms seven in 10 Americans support limits on abortion, specifically, limits on abortions in the third trimester of pregnancy.

In the results, 72 percent of Americans support limiting abortion to, at most, six months of pregnancy – the end of the second trimester. This includes 71 percent of women, 78 percent of Independents and 56 percent of rank-and-file Democrats.

In a binary choice between limits on abortion and no limits on abortion, over two thirds (67 percent) reject the no-limits position.

Sixty-two percent of Americans  oppose forcing doctors, nurses and other health professionals to carry out abortions.

Fifty-seven percent of Americans, including 54 percent of women, oppose using tax dollars to fund abortions domestically. Seventy-three percent oppose using tax dollars to fund abortion abroad.

As for at-home medication abortions sent via telemedicine, 63 percent of Americans, including 62 percent of women, agree an in-person visit to a medical professional should be required before abortion drugs can be given out.

And, 83 percent of Americans support pro-life pregnancy resource centers. This includes 83 percent of Independents, 79 percent of Democrats, 82 percent of women and 80 percent of self-identified pro-choice respondents.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, reacted to the findings.

“Democrats who are still ‘Shouting Your Abortion’ after losing the presidency, House, and Senate in 2024 should think again. Their agenda of taxpayer-funded abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy remains deeply unpopular, as do their attacks on pro-life doctors and pregnancy centers that offer real alternatives to abortion. With a new administration in charge, we look forward to reversing Biden’s weaponization of every aspect of the federal government to push abortion on demand, getting American taxpayers out of the abortion business, and a new focus on putting our government to work to truly serve both mother and child,” she said.

“This year’s survey results show that Americans are once again firm in their belief that abortion should be significantly limited yet laws should include exceptions for rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother,” said Marist Poll director Barbara L. Carvalho in a Jan. 23 press release issued by the Knights of Columbus.
