Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe has declared a state of emergency so state resources can also be used in response. Local police estimate 6,000 people are attending the rally, and 1,000 law enforcement officers have been deployed to the city.

Earlier Saturday, police used tear gas and smoke bombs in an attempt to break up the fights.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
