President Donald Trump is being defended on Twitter for his recent meeting with North Korean Dictator Kim Jong-Un. And it’s from an unlikely source.

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) tweeted Thursday that he’s disappointed with people who are taking pride in the president’s inability to reach a denuclearization deal with North Korea during the Vietnam summit.

“The hashtag #TrumpFail is trending and I find it inappropriate,” Lieu wrote. “People should not be hoping the President fails or taking pleasure in his failure on the global stage.”

Lieu is an active critic of the president and his policies. He, like most Democrats, expressed distaste for, “Trump’s harmful immigration and anti-civil rights agenda.” When Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen were convicted for financial crimes, Lieu went after both the GOP and Trump in a statement last year.

“You have various Republican Members of Congress arguing that self-dealing at taxpayer expense,” he said. “Sweetheart deals for rich friends, and collusion with hostile foreign powers are normal ways of doing government business. They’re not. It’s emblematic of Trump’s culture of corruption and every one of us should be outraged.”

But the congressman’s recent tweet pitted him against a swarm of commenters saying that they want the president to fail.

This isn’t the first time Lieu supported Trump. In December 2018 he made a Twitter post congratulating him for deciding to pull U.S. soldiers out of Syria.

“Whether you like @realDonaldTrump or not,” he wrote in his recent tweet. “He represents America in foreign affairs. We want America to succeed.”
