Susan Rice Would 'Certainly Say Yes' if Asked to Be Biden's Running Mate

Obama era National Security Adviser Susan Rice has said that she would "certainly say yes" if asked to be Joe Biden's running mate. Speaking to PBS, Rice said she was fully committed to supporting Biden's bid for the White House in 2020.

"I’m humbled and honored to be among the extremely accomplished women who are reportedly being considered in that regard,” she said on Thursday. “I know Joe Biden well. I’ve worked with him very closely. I know he’ll be a great president of the United States." Asked straight out if she would accept an invitation to be Biden's vice president, Rice didn't hesitate.

"I certainly would say yes,” she said. PBS reporter Margaret Hoover was slightly shocked by Rice's candor, to which Rice said, “should I say no?” She then acknowledged that she was likely not alone in her enthusiastic endorsement of Joe Biden. "

“You know, I think everybody who’s been asked that question has given the same answer," Rice continued. So that’s not a surprise.” Rice is not alone in her eagerness to be on the Democratic presidential ticket. Stacey Abrams, who launched a failed but competitive campaign for governor of Georgia, has not been shy about her desire to be vice president in a hypothetical Biden White House.

"I would be an excellent running mate," Abrams said in April. "I have the capacity to attract voters by motivating typically ignored communities...I am very self-aware, and I know that my résumé...is usually reduced to ‘She didn’t become the governor of Georgia.’ But it is important to understand all the things I did to prepare for that contest."

Biden said at the last Democratic presidential debate in March that whomever he selected as his vice presidential candidate must be a woman. Rice, 55, and Abrams, 46, both significantly younger than Biden, could potentially ease the mind of voters nervous about Biden's age and mental capacity.

Rice claimed that her interest in being Biden's running mate wasn't due to interest in campaigning for any particular issue, she only wanted to help Biden achieve the office of president in any way that she could.

“Because I believe that’s what is vitally important for the future of our country,” Rice said of her eagerness to throw her hat in the ring. “And it’s not about me. It’s not about my ambitions." Apart from serving as the National Security adviser for the final three years of President Obama's administration, Rice was also the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations until 2013 and worked in various roles in the Bill Clinton White House in the 1990s.

Rice is also known for unmasking at least one official that was part of the Trump transition team between the current president's 2016 election and his inauguration early the next year. This week, 39 additional names from the Obama administration were declassified as having made unmasking requests during the transition period.
