Catholic leaders have condemned former Miss California and ex-member of the White House Religious Liberty Commission, Carrie Prejean Boller, after she invoked her faith in a controversial anti-Israel and borderline anti-Semitic rant during a hearing on combating anti-Semitism and protecting religious freedom in the United States.
Boller, wearing a Palestinian flag pin, pressed several Jewish witnesses to claim that anti-Zionism is not equivalent to anti-Semitism. That claim has been peddled by many commentators and politicians, oftentimes a simple cover-up for soft anti-Semitism. Boller also erupted in anger when someone labeled Candace Owens as anti-Semitic, drawing laughter from others in the room.
Former Miss California only recently converted to Catholicism from evangelical Christianity in April of 2025. "I am a Catholic, and Catholics don’t embrace Zionism," she said during the hearing.
Catholic League President Bill Donohue blasted Boller in an opinion piece, declaring that she was not representative of what it means to be Catholic.
"Prejean Boller is a former Miss California and a convert to Catholicism," he wrote Wednesday. "She does not run a Catholic organization, has no Catholic credentials as an author or instructor, and indeed represents no one but herself. For her to say, without qualification, that ‘Catholics do not embrace Zionism,’ is presumptuous and arrogant."
"Zionism is a movement that promotes Jewish self-determination in a homeland," he said. "There are millions of Catholics like myself who, even if they do not identify themselves as Zionists, recognize the Jewish state of Israel. Prejean Boller apparently does not—she is more comfortable showing up at the Religious Liberty Commission wearing a Palestinian flag pin. So telling."
Shawn Carney, president and CEO of 40 Days for Life, a pro-life group, added that the "claim that Catholics are against Jews is absurd."
"This division is a recent fad and an online invention," Carney said. "For centuries, Catholics have understood that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the Davidic kingdom and that our faith comes from the Jews. Catholic teaching holds that the Church is the fulfillment of the promises of the Old Covenant. To suddenly claim that Catholics are against Jews is absurd — it is a modern, internet-based error."
Boller responded to her ouster in a now-familiar way, posting on X that she is not suicidal and is in good health, a tactic some use when fearing assassination and potential cover-ups. Fortunately for Boller, her situation doesn’t appear to carry a level of urgency required for an assassination.

She has also continued to suggest that her faith is guiding her views against Zionism.
The Catholic Church has never taught that the modern State of Israel fulfills biblical prophecy or that Catholics are religiously obligated to support any political nation as part of God’s plan of salvation.

Boller has continued to push back against her removal from the commission, even clashing with Chairman Dan Patrick, who announced it, insisting that only the president has the authority to remove her. While President Trump has yet to personally weigh in, the Trump administration has indicated that she will no longer serve as a member.
