Argentine President Javier Milei had a message for New Yorkers considering leaving their city following the gubernatorial victory of democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani last Tuesday.
“I dedicate these words to New Yorkers, who have taken the opposite path that of Argentina, and will now be living under a communist party,” Milei declared at a Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Circle Retreat and Gala at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday.“They should know that if the going gets tough, they will always be warmly welcome in our land if they seek to prosper.”

Milei stands as the polar opposite of Mamdani, having built his entire campaign and governing philosophy on faith in the power and promise of the free market. A devoted student of the Austrian school of economics, he vowed to rescue Argentina’s economy from decades of socialist mismanagement. This included government-run businesses (like city-run grocery stores), rent freezing policies, and significantly higher taxes on wealthy individuals.
Since taking office in 2023, Milei has abolished more than 200 government agencies and cut the number of ministries from 18 to nine. The results have been striking: inflation is down, poverty is down, and Argentina has recorded its first budget surplus in 14 years.
Milei’s party, La Libertad Avanza, won a decisive mandate in October, capturing over 40 percent of the vote and substantially expanding its representation in both chambers of Congress. The message was unmistakable: the free market works, and Milei wants New Yorkers to share in its rewards, even as their city rejects it.
