President Donald Trump wants the House-approved budget resolution passed in the U.S. Senate before August recess.
The resolution is one of the key steps to ultimately passing “Reconciliation 3.0” — the budgetary proposal meant to include additional national defense funding and parts of the Trump-backed “SAVE America Act.”
“This will be one of the most consequential Bills in America’s History. Strengthening our powerful Military, providing aid for our Farmers and, most importantly, as much of THE SAVE AMERICA ACT as possible,” Trump posted to Truth Social on Thursday.
“Our Voters will be extremely happy — And even impressed! I am asking that the Senate adopt a Budget Resolution, which can pass with a simple Majority, before leaving for the August recess. We are ready to work side-by-side with the Senate to get this done for the American People!” he added.
The deadline from the president comes as Senate Majority Leader John Thune floated the possibility of holding reconciliation until a continuing resolution to fund the government is passed, as he’s suggested it could be a viable backup plan to avert a shutdown. Reconciliation only needs a simple majority to pass the Senate.
However, the White House indicated on Thursday during a press briefing that “patience” with Thune is lessening, as the president’s top legislative priority is the “SAVE America Act,” which is primarily known for its proposals to require voter identification and documentary proof of citizenship in federal elections.
“His patience is running out,” Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
“The House did its job. The Senate needs to do its job too,” she later added.
Thune said that the support is not there yet for the federal elections bill.
“Well, maybe she or somebody else ought to get on the phone and get the votes,” Thune fired back, according to Punchbowl News.

The Senate Republican also cast doubt on support for reconciliation in the upper chamber.
“As I’ve said before you got to get to 50, and I can’t count to 50 right now on a budget resolution,” Thune said, according to The Hill.
August recess runs from August 7-Sept. 14, but some lawmakers want to see it cancelled in order to keep senators in Washington.
