Samantha Bee, host of “Full Frontal,” has criticized the new pro-life film “Unplanned”, which made a surprisingly impressive debut at the box office last weekend.
Bee opened her show Wednesday night by calling “Unplanned” an “anti-choice propaganda movie” and pointed out its “not awful” showing at the box office, where it earned more than $6 million and placed fourth behind the blockbusters “Dumbo,” “Us,” and “Captain Marvel.”
“It’s obviously ridiculous and no one should see it, but the trailer is honestly wonderful,” Bee sarcastically told her audience. “Ordinarily, I wouldn’t waste precious time talking about a movie so bad, it makes 'A Christmas Prince 2: Royal Wedding' look like 'Citizen Kane 2: A Christmas Cane'… but the vice president tweeted about it from his official account, which makes it news.”
Bee was referring to a tweet posted by Vice President Mike Pence earlier this week, which had celebrated the film’s release.
“This is incredibly embarrassing, especially when you factor in how low our bar is for vice presidents right now,” Bee said. This time the TBS star was speaking in reference to the allegations of improper physical contact that at least seven women have now made against former Vice President Joe Biden.
Bee went on to note that “Unplanned” had sold more than 700,000 tickets, and joked that most of them were sold to “Duggars,” stars of the reality series "19 Kids and Counting."
Bee also called the pro-life film “mostly made-up,” unlike the “real and terrifying laws” that are being passed in certain states, such as Georgia’s recently passed “heartbeat” bill that outlaws abortion once a heartbeat can be detected.
“It’s a time when most women don’t even know they’re pregnant yet, since it’s two weeks after a missed period,” said Bee about the Georgia bill. “Two weeks after my missed period, I don’t know if I’m pregnant or if it’s just my amazing training for the Olympics. Either way, Bob Costas is involved.”
The film “Unplanned” is based on the memoir of the same name by Abby Johnson, which tells the story of Johnson working as a Planned Parenthood clinic director until, compelled by the brutality of abortion, she finally decided to walk away.
“All Abby Johnson ever wanted to do was help women,” the film’s website reads. “As one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the nation, she was involved in upwards of 22,000 abortions and counseled countless women about their reproductive choices. Her passion surrounding a woman’s right to choose even led her to become a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood, fighting to enact legislation for the cause she so deeply believed in.”
