Reverend Al Sharpton, one of the left's favorite figures, appeared on MSNBC on Monday to discuss Christianity Today's editorial calling for President Donald Trump's impeachment. The editorial, written by editor-in-chief Mark Galli, focused on Trump's character and personality, not necessarily his actions, as a reason to back impeachment.
Although the website was founded by prominent evangelist Billy Graham, the Graham family has not been involved in the publication in many years. In fact, Graham's son, Franklin, came to Trump's defense, saying his father would be "disappointed" in what the publication has become. He also made it very clear that the elder Graham voted for Trump and would be proud of the successes the president has had thus far.
Of course, lefties instantly clung the editorial, saying Galli's take is pure proof that evangelicals could not possibly support President Trump. Sharpton ran with that take during the MSNBC segment.
"You've given up the soul of the church. What do we stand for? And I think it's a devastating blow and this is a magazine that was founded by Billy Graham. They also supported the impeachment of Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton so why all of a sudden is it so controversial with these leaders that they would come for the impeachment of Donald Trump?" Sharpton asked. "When they did it to Bill Clinton the evangelical leaders weren't insulted. When they did it to Richard Nixon they weren't."
Sharpton made a far-fetched claim that evangelicals are upset with the editorial because it "exposes" them for supporting Trump. But, even more shocking, Sharpton claimed Christians would "sell Jesus out" if they could benefit from it.
"The reason they're so offended is it's exposing all of them, that they would take this shameless con man over the principles that they're preaching in the Holy Season as we celebrate Jesus," he explained. "They would sell Jesus out if they felt they could get something from it. That's the inference he's making from his editorial. And that's sad on many levels."
Here's the thing: evangelicals knew what they were getting when they voted for President Trump. They knew he had multiple marriages, he spoke his mind and said what people needed to hear, not necessarily what they wanted to hear. People voted for Trump because he is not the stereotypical politician. They wanted something different. And while evangelicals did not agree with Trump's crassness, they knew he was a better choice than Hillary Clinton.
But then again people like Sharpton are eager to tear down anyone and everyone who disagrees with his ideology and his point of view. Want to keep your hard earned money? You can't possibly be a Christian. Believe charity should happen on an individual basis and not done by the government? You can't possibly be a Christian. Do you believe people have the ability to make decisions for themselves? You can't possibly be a Christian. Do you believe in protecting the unborn? You can't possibly be a Christian.
That's the drum that people like Sharpton beat to. And instead of trying shame other people for supporting a politician that they do not, they should be celebrating the successes Trump has had. Because Trump's successes are successes for the American people as a whole. And isn't that what Democrats claim to be all about, the collective whole?
