When It Comes to Abortion, the Left Is Terrified of Women Actually Having a Choice

When It Comes to Abortion, the Left Is Terrified of Women Actually Having a Choice

I've written quite a bit about First Choice Pregnancy Centers in New Jersey, the Christian and pro-life medical nonprofit that runs a pregnancy center serving women and families in New Jersey. The state's former Attorney General, Matthew J. Platkin, subpoenaed First Choice back in 2023, demanding a decade's worth of documents, including statements on abortion pill reversal, information provided to clients and donors, personnel documents, copies of every First Choice advertisement and donor solicitation, and information about external organizations First Choice worked with. First Choice Executive Director Aimee Huber called it a 'fishing expedition.'

It was clearly a fishing expedition meant to expose staff and donors with the purpose of intimidating them so they would cease supporting a place that gave a woman a choice other than abortion. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in April in favor of First Choice, which sued New Jersey, and said the organization had a right to sue Platkin in federal court.

Despite that ruling, New Jersey's current Attorney General, Jennifer Davenport, returned to a state court and demanded enforcement of the subpoena anyway.

Why?

Crisis pregnancy centers terrify the Left. It's that simple.

So they've worked tirelessly to spread the lie that crisis pregnancy centers are bad, dishonest, and manipulative. That was Platkin's reported motive behind the First Choice subpoena: the organization was misleading donors. That argument doesn't withstand even basic scrutiny, of course. First Choice was never shy about their Christian, pro-life ethics and no donor would have mistakenly believed they were sending money to First Choice because it provided abortions.

Yet the reality doesn't matter. The narrative, however, does. And it says crisis pregnancy centers are bad.

This is the narrative New Jersey and other states are pushing, and for no reason other than this: they don't want women to have a choice. They want women to abort their children.

Choice is anathema to the Left, and they will do whatever it takes to make sure women who desperately want to have their babies, even in less-than-ideal circumstances, get the help they need to make that happen.

They much prefer to put women through the abortion mill.

That's why they lie about abortion laws in states like Texas, Georgia, and Florida. They tell women those laws prohibit the treatment of ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages, making up stories about women bleeding out in hospital parking lots because doctors are afraid of performing an illegal abortion. Until about five minutes ago, even Planned Parenthood said treatment for those conditions was not an abortion.

It's also why the Biden administration removed all guardrails to the abortion pill. The drugs can be ordered with minimal medical oversight; women have been slipped the drug by their partners, and against their wishes. The FDA also low-balled the serious risks involved with Mifepristone. Roughly 11 percent of women who take the drug risk potentially life-threatening complications, including infections. Instead of protecting women, Democrats turn a blind eye. New York Governor Kathy Hochul refuses to extradite a doctor to Louisiana after that doctor mailed the drug to a mother who forced her pregnant teen daughter to take it, ending a pregnancy that the girl very much wanted. That teen wasn't alone. In Ohio, a surgeon faces felony charges for force-feeding his girlfriend the drug, and Catherine Herring's estranged husband spiked her drinks with the drug to terminate her pregnancy while the marriage fell apart. Herring was able to get medication to reverse that, and her daughter was born healthy in 2022.

But with most Americans supporting some restrictions on abortion, the goalposts had to be moved. There's been a blatant push to categorize any procedure dealing with pregnancy or the uterus as an abortion. That means that when I had non-cancerous fibroid tumors removed in 2004, I had an 'abortion' and when my three sons were born in 2007, 2009, and 2013, I had three more 'abortions.'

I did no such thing, and I am deeply offended that my gynecological care and the births of my children are being reclassified as a morally abhorrent procedure I would never voluntarily procure. Yet the Left's need to normalize abortions by labeling everything as an abortion is more important than the truth.

While there are some Leftists who have abortions just because they can (and they've made the t-shirts to commemorate their bloodlust), many women have abortions because they worry they can't afford a baby. Some are pressured by the baby's father or their families to terminate, and many feel they have no other option. Crisis pregnancy centers provide them the support, both emotional and financial, that give them the ability to have their babies.

The Left hates that.

So much for my body, my choice.
