The Democratic Party almost made it 200 years. Founded in 1828 to support Andrew Jackson's presidential campaign, it entered its death throes last night after several Democratic Socialists, with the backing of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, won their Congressional primaries in New York.
Much in the same way the Cordyceps fungus, made famous by the Naughty Dog video game and HBO series 'The Last of Us,' invades a host, takes over its brain, and uses it as a puppet to further propagate itself, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have infiltrated and overtaken the Democratic Party. They will wear the name like a skin suit, but trust me, this isn't your grandfather's Democratic Party anymore.
The election of Darializa Avila Chevalier is genuinely a DEFCON 1 moment for both the Democrats and the future of US democracy.

The Democratic Party is left 'reeling' by the loses in New York.

[Rep. Tom] Suozzi said it is time for the Democrats' moderate wing to "wake up" to the threat posed to them by the democratic socialists.
- "Economic insecurity, climate change and immigrant injustice are all real problems, and alternative solutions must be offered. It's time for a great deal of hard work to out organize the extremists on the right and the left!"
- The centrist House Democrat who spoke anonymously said the results show that "appeasement doesn't work. You have to be tough. Nancy Pelosi brought a machine gun to a knife fight. You can't win with these guys by playing patty cake."
My sympathies are limited, of course. This wound is entirely self-inflicted, opened wide by the fact that President Trump, for reasons I will never fully fathom, broke the brains of almost every Democrat from Bangor to the Bay Area. Rather than not be insane, Democrats decided the way forward was knee-jerk opposition to everything and anything President Trump did.

It's why vandals are slashing the Reflecting Pool lining and protesting in favor of algae: President Trump is for it, therefore, I must oppose it. As I have said repeatedly, if President Trump announced a cure for cancer tomorrow, Democrats would go to court and get some judge to issue a nationwide injunction against the treatment.
But I will also argue that this was the inevitable outcome of the Democratic Party anyway. Unable to act sanely on any issue, Democrats have spent years tiptoeing around how they really felt about America, voters, and Western Civilization. Rather than slow-walk the reveal, however, the DSA simply slammed on the gas pedal. Every candidate who won last night has said things that other prominent Democrats have thought or said only in polite company.
We should absolutely take this threat seriously. These socialists hate America. They want to abolish ICE and prisons, turn violent criminals loose in our communities, bankrupt us by enacting massive fraud-ridden social programs, on which they get rich with our tax dollars, while importing more illegal immigrants to keep them in power. If you're Jewish, their open and obvious hatred of Jews and Israel should terrify you, too.
I say this with no ill will or animosity: if you hate the Democratic Party, then please don’t run for our nomination.

Don’t use our resources. Don’t rely on our volunteers. Don’t use our infrastructure. Don’t ask Democrats to invest their time, money, and energy in your…
But in a nation where Donald Trump beat Democrats twice because they were slowly going nuts even back in 2016, it is not likely to embrace people who openly vow to make their lives worse, especially when we watch the collapse of New York City, Seattle, and other places that have already elected Socialists to seats of power.
Victories in New York do not — as of yet — constitute a national mandate. But as I wrote about last fall, the socialists are playing chess and setting the board. Only the Democrats can excise the demons that are the socialists from their ranks. Will they reclaim their party or let it fall to the reds? That remains to be seen.
For now, however, the Democratic Party no longer exists. It's means of production has been taken over by the socialists.
