Last week, I was almost the victim of a crime. My neighbor sent me footage from his home security camera showing an unidentified male trying to get through the windows of my house shortly after 4 AM. He even moved my trash can in an attempt to climb onto it to reach another window. Thankfully, the windows were locked and secured. He did not get in.
Yes, police have been notified and, thanks to the Nextdoor app, they have a possible lead. If this is the person, you'll not be shocked to learn he's got a criminal history and was just released on parole last month.
I would be lying if I said my peace wasn't disturbed. Then I remembered something: I own firearms. The safe is right next to my bed, and I have never been more grateful for the Second Amendment. I would protect us if anyone broke into my house.
My next thought was a chilling one: Democrats, if they had their way, would strip me of my Second Amendment rights. They would have preferred that I, and my sons, be at the mercy of whatever intentions that man had when he tried to gain access to our home. Democrats would proudly proclaim, of course, that they were "saving one life" when — in reality — they just put four innocent ones, my family, at risk.
Which is why, as I watched the horrible story out of Virginia unfold yesterday, I realized it's time to have a serious discussion about the failures of Democrat gun control laws. Former Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax killed his wife, Cerina, and then turned the gun on himself. Their teenage children were in the home, but were physically unharmed. They are now orphans, however.

Let me preface this by saying that the true victims here are Cerina and her children. What happened to them was a tragedy, and one that could have been avoided, maybe.
It sounds like, after his failed gubernatorial campaign — which was thwarted by allegations of sexual misconduct — Fairfax grew increasingly troubled. The Fairfaxes were going through a divorce, too, and it appears a delivery of paperwork in that divorce is what triggered the murder-suicide.
That's from The Washington Post, too.
WaPo: Justin Fairfax increasingly erratic weeks before murder-suicide, court records show

Former Virginia lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax had been ordered to leave his family's home and lost custody of his two children in the weeks before he killed his wife, Cerina - and then himself - in their home early Thursday, according to court documents.
The onetime rising star in Virginia's Democratic Party, whose career was derailed by sexual assault allegations that he vociferously denied for years, had become increasingly isolated and was behaving erratically, records in the couple's divorce proceeding show.
"Heavy daily alcohol" use had become routine after the end of his term in 2022, and his wife told the court that he had used money meant for horseback-riding lessons for their children to purchase a gun that year.
As I pointed out, Virginia's red flag laws — legislation that passed when Fairfax cast the tie-breaking vote — did nothing to stop this. Despite what the WaPo describes as "increasingly erratic" behavior, no one bothered to report Fairfax to the proper authorities so that those red flag laws would apply to him.
Instead, the Left is doubling down and demanding more gun control, including Brady United Against Gun Violence, a major gun control group.
This is horrific.

A woman is shot and killed by a husband or male dating partner every 16 hours in the U.S.
We must do more to address easy access to gun, keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers, and protect women. https://t.co/iOjvqD7A1D
They worked closely with Virginia Democrats, including Fairfax, to pass the very legislation they said would prevent the Fairfax murder-suicide. Some are saying Brady endorsed Fairfax, which wouldn't surprise me, but I found no statements or record of an official endorsement.
March for Our Lives, another gun control group, issued a similar statement that read, in part (emphasis added):
Today, we woke up to the devastating news of the shooting death of Cerina Fairfax by her estranged husband, reminding us that when domestic violence is combined with access to guns, it too often ends in irreversible tragedy. That this act of violence was carried out by someone who once held public office only underscores the painful truth that status and power do not mitigate harm or abuse.
...
We cannot afford to treat cases of domestic violence shootings as private tragedies. They are preventable acts of violence that demand loud and urgent systemic intervention. This means strengthening firearm relinquishment laws for abusers and educating young people about how guns can turn everyday interactions into moments of incredible harm, where conflict escalates into lethal violence in an instant.
More laws?
What about enforcing the ones already on the books? Because Democrats, by and large, seem wholly uninterested in actually applying the gun control laws they enact, especially when those who break the laws are Democrats or members of their preferred constituencies.
In New Orleans, police arrested 19 people for illegally carrying firearms. Some of them were released after surrendering their guns. The Lt. Governor, Billy Nungesser, slammed the decision as showing there are "no consequences" for such crimes. It came after New Orleans city leaders vowed to crack down on illegal gun possession.
In California, Keith Breazell, who had prior convictions for assault with a semiautomatic firearm, was released early from state prison. He was caught weeks later with a new gun.
Rapper Polo G had felony gun charges dropped after he was arrested with a firearm in New York City.
And, most famously, Hunter Biden received a pardon from his father, which erased the gun charges he was convicted of in 2024. Biden made gun control a big part of his presidency and pushed for stricter gun laws.
If someone had reported Fairfax to the authorities, would Virginia have taken his guns? Maybe. It's also possible, given the Democrats' history of protecting their own, that the very red flag laws Fairfax championed wouldn't have applied to him. Because reasons. But if Democrats actually stopped acting like they're above the laws they force on the rest of us, and reported Fairfax to the state, maybe he and Cerina would still be alive today.
But Democrats didn't. Instead, they proved that gun control laws don't work.
