Here's Why Democrats' Newfound Concern for the Voting Rights of Married Women Rings Hollow

Here's Why Democrats' Newfound Concern for the Voting Rights of Married Women Rings Hollow

Democrats have gone all-in on opposing the SAVE Act by falsely claiming it will prohibit married women from voting. The Left says that because women's married names do not match the names on their birth certificates, they will be prohibited from registering to vote.

There is no woman, married or otherwise, whose married name appears on their birth certificate. The surname on a birth certificate never changes. What the SAVE Act would ask married women to do is provide proof of their name change, which is easily done with a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or other legal document noting the name change.

But Democrats believe women are stupid, and given how some women vote, it's hard to argue otherwise.

But here's how I know this is a lie, aside from the obvious: just two years ago, Democrats were arguing that married women were only voting Republican because their husbands were forcing them to do so. It was such a big, albeit faux, concern on the Left that they set up a website, VoteWithoutFear.com, and a hotline number for info on "voting safely."

"You do not have to tell your husband or boyfriend who you voted for. He will not and cannot find out who you voted for, unless you tell him. It’s your vote," the website reminded women.

Actress Julia Roberts even jumped on the "women are forced to vote Republican" train with an ad in which she said, "In the one place in America where women still have a right to choose, you can vote any way you want, and no one will ever know."

The common theme here is this: women are stupid. Women have no agency. Women only vote Republican because they're forced to by the men in their lives. That last one is particularly amusing to me, because the men who know me know they'd never get away with telling me how to vote. I'd laugh at them.

There were a lot of Leftist men on social media who accused me of being racist, bigoted, homophobic, transphobic, and suffering from "internalized misogyny" for not voting for Kamala Harris. Refusing to vote for her was "voting against my own best interests," and with Democrats vowing massive lawfare against Trump supporters when they regain power, it's clear they were trying to browbeat me into voting the way they demanded I vote.

Of course, all of that makes this sudden concern for the voting rights of married women ring hollow. Married women tend to vote more conservatively and more often for Republicans, and not because our husbands tell us to. Instead, Republican politics tend to be more family-friendly, while Democrats barely contain their disdain for families. Democrat Aftyn Behn even said women who get married and have kids are supporting "deeply patriarchal" structures. It's hard to imagine why she lost her Congressional race.

It would seem to me, and I say this sort of tongue-in-cheek, that Democrats would have a vested interest in making sure married women who lean Republican had more obstacles to vote, because it would help Democrats electorally. Or, at least it would show Democrats are consistent in their disdain for married and Republican-voting women.

From saying we're stupid, lacking agency, and that we vote the way our husbands tell us, the best Democrats can do, it seems, is demean and belittle women in their efforts to undermine election integrity.

Women in general, and married women in particular, should not be used as political hostages. We are not confused about our names, and we are certainly not too incompetent, ignorant, or poor to produce the same legal documents we use for taxes, mortgages, passports, and driver’s licenses.

If Democrats are worried about women’s rights, they might try respecting women’s judgment. Because the real insult here isn’t the SAVE Act — it’s the assumption that women lack the basic agency to participate in civic life without being treated like children.
