Roger Goodell Punts on Political Halftime Show

I've long said that politics is downstream of culture, and I've also argued the Right's refusal to get involved with cultural issues hurts us at the polls. People watch sports and movies and read books, and by refusing to engage with pop culture, we've ceded a lot of ground to the Left.

And for the Left, everything is political. They spent a month last fall whining about the "white supremacist dog whistles" of a Sydney Sweeney jeans ad, after all. They infuse politics into every single aspect of life, and it's a misery. But to pretend it doesn't exist is also naive. It needs to be removed, root and branch, so the Left's stranglehold on media (both social and otherwise) is finally broken.

It doesn't seem many have the spine for that, and some are flat-out denying that it'll ever happen, like NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who believes Bad Bunny and Green Day, the halftime acts for the Super Bowl, won't get political.

Ha!

My sweet summer child, it's adorable that you think Bad Bunny and Green Day won't get political.

Bad Bunny has made a name for himself by opposing ICE and being highly political. When he was announced as the headliner, we learned he intentionally excluded the United States from his 2025-2026 concert tour. Why? Because of our immigration policies.

“People from the US could come here to see the show. Latinos and Puerto Ricans of the United States could also travel here, or to any part of the world,” he told i-D magazine. “But there was the issue that … ICE could be outside (my concert venue). And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about.”

He was one of the many who turned last weekend's Grammys into Minneapolis 2.0 with warmer weather, demanding that ICE leave our cities and stop doing their jobs. He's also made it clear he intends to wear a dress during the halftime show, and perform it entirely in Spanish.

As far as I'm aware, the NFL has made no move to change those plans. Wearing a dress is political. Singing entirely in Spanish is political.

Green Day also isn't shy about being political. Last April, they changed the lyrics of one of their songs, "Jesus of Suburbia," to attack Israel. Back in 2016, they turned the AMAs into an anti-Trump rally, chanting, "No Trump, No KKK, No Fascist USA." And Goodell doesn't think they're going to spout off during the Super Bowl?

Please.

Neither Bad Bunny nor Green Day has anything to lose by getting political. Their mics won't be cut, the cameras won't cut away, and they won't be forcibly removed from the stage mid-show. They'll get political, and they'll get away with it.

The Super Bowl is the most-watched television program of the year, bringing in more than 100 million viewers on average. That's a lot of eyeballs that'll see Bad Bunny and Green Day spread their anti-ICE, anti-Trump message. And that's exactly why the NFL booked them for the show. They knew their political views, they knew how outspoken they were, and they booked them anyway.

Thankfully, TPUSA is hosting an alternative halftime show featuring Kid Rock, Brantly Gilbert, and Lee Brice. That's what I'll be watching.
