The Left's Somali Exception to Collective Blame

AP Photo/Julio Cortez

Leftists love collectivism. It is the bread and butter of their political ideology, and while they may cheer on "diversity," what they mean by "diversity" is only superficial. Sure, you can have blue hair, brown skin, or tattoos. You can be a transgender furry or a one-legged hobo and they'll welcome you. What they don't tolerate, however, is diversity of thought and opinion. You must toe the Leftist line, or you'll be ostracized. Hold conservative opinions, and they'll not only justify assassinating you in front of a crowd, but say you (and anyone who agreed with you) had it coming.

That collectivist mentality is why, any time there's a mass shooting, every single gun owner — myself included — is to blame. I was born in 1983, but because I'm a white woman, I'm responsible for the actions of white people who lived in 1683, 1783, and 1883.

But the collectivism miraculously stops when, and only when, certain (D)emographic groups are involved. The latest are the Somalis in Minnesota, and the Minnesota Star Tribune is the one lamenting these much-maligned people.

Here's more:

While it is natural that incidents of deceit shake the trust that people have in their institutions and each other, it is our shared values as Minnesotans, not our distrust and fear, that must guide us through this crisis. Fraud has no racial or ethnic bias, and fear and hatred as response to fraud does not rebuild trust.

When news of this fraud first broke in 2022, I was serving in the federal government — advancing democracy, combating corruption and countering authoritarianism around the world. Having worked in private philanthropy and in the public sector, I have reviewed, recommended and evaluated grants worth hundreds of millions of dollars in the past 25 years. I know the dangers of fraud and the diligent efforts needed to ensure ethical and responsible financial management.

We Minnesotans pride ourselves on fairness, integrity and common sense. We solve problems without shouting down our neighbors. Yet the conversation unfolding today has strayed far from those values. In many conversations, the entire Somali community in Minnesota has been flattened into ugly and untrue caricatures. Somali Minnesotans — a community of refugees that has rebuilt our lives here, started businesses, served in the military and contributed profoundly to our shared culture — are being treated as a monolith rather than as individuals. This is not only wrong; it is dangerous to our shared future.

Gee, if only that standard applied to the rest of us.

Not even three months ago, the Star Tribune was maligning all gun owners, using an op-ed by a gun owner.

Guns are not the problem, but that's not the point here.

Two days ago, the same outlet smeared all conservatives as having a "pro-Hitler problem."

We do not, but — like guns — that's not the point here, either.

The point is this: I am not a Leftist, and I believe in ideological consistency. Therefore, I will say that the Star Tribune is correct. We shouldn't malign all Somalis just as we shouldn't malign gun owners or conservatives. We should, however, hold them accountable.

If the Left doesn't want that to happen, then they need to start holding the Somalis who have committed crimes accountable. To the fullest extent of the law, up to and including deportation. And they have to stop hiding behind racism, Trump Derangement Syndrome, and other excuses to cover for those who have not only defrauded Minnesota taxpayers of billions, but caused the death of at least one man, and have sent money to the Somali Islamic terror group Al-Shabaab.

Despite this damage, Hennepin County Judge Sarah West threw out a jury's verdict in a $7.2 million Medicare fraud case, saying the state "relied heavily on circumstantial evidence" and that the state did not "exclude other reasonable, rational inferences." The suspect, Abdifatah Yusuf, and his wife, allegedly ran a "home health company" out of a mailbox at an address where multiple other "home health companies" also operated, and billed the state millions for services they didn't provide.

Jurors expressed confusion and dismay over Judge West's decision. "I'm shocked," said jury foreman Ben Walfoort. "I'm shocked based off of all of the evidence that was presented to us and the obvious guilt that we saw based off of said evidence. It was not a difficult decision whatsoever."

I'm with the jurors on this one. What "other reasonable, rational inferences" can be made when $7.2 million is stolen, and the state showed the Yusufs used some of that money on luxury goods? None.

Such decisions make people, rightly, suspect political and racially-motivated reasoning and not justice. So far as I'm aware, Judge West has done nothing to dispel these suspicions.

In the Feeding Our Future fraud scandal, 76 of the 78 defendants charged are Somali.

Not only does the judicial system need to hold Somalis accountable for financial and violent crimes, but the Left also needs to demand that Somalis assimilate into Minnesota culture.

When Qalinle Ibrahm abducted and raped a 12-year-old girl, members of his community wrote a letter of support, saying Ibrahm was "not assimilated into non-Somali culture" when he raped a 12-year-old.

Where are the condemnations of this? The breathless op-eds talking about the "pro-rape problem" in the Somali community? Nowhere to be found.

In the same vein, Somali rapist Abdimahat Bille Mohamed has now served no jail time despite raping a minor and another woman. He was just arrested again for raping a third woman after kidnapping and holding her hostage for days.

Will his Islamic center write a letter saying he just hasn't assimilated into "non-Somali culture"?

I wouldn't be surprised if they did. The soft bigotry of low expectations runs rampant.

So if the Left doesn't want to "malign" any particular community, it is the Left — not conservatives and not President Trump — who must demand that "community" stop stealing our money, raping our women, and undermining our culture.

Until then, maligning them and deporting them all is the moderate option.
