This is quite the haul, and while the party in power has the advantage of raising cash, the chasm between Democrats and Republicans this cycle is immense. I can’t recall a time when the GOP had such a dominant streak in amassing so many stacks of high society. But here we are.
Republicans have what feels like Brazil's GDP in the bank, while the Democratic National Committee is turning over sofa seats for pennies, telling vendors not to bill them until after the cycle, and putting their own headquarters up as collateral to obtain new loans. In July, all three major arms were cleaning the Democrats’ clocks (via Politico):
Democrats are apprehensive that Republicans’ massive outside spending advantage could erase the prospects of a blue wave heading into the midterms.
The three main GOP party committees and their two caucus-aligned super PACs reported $657 million cash on hand at the end of June, according to the latest filings with the Federal Election Commission. That’s nearly double the $334 million held by their Democratic rivals.
And those disparities don’t even account for the largest potential GOP money bomb, the MAGA Inc. super PAC linked to President Donald Trump, which reported over $400 million in the bank as of a few weeks ago. Democrats have no equivalent to MAGA Inc.
The National Republican Congressional Committee hauled in $7.9 million last month, giving them a nice nest egg of $90+ million to spend defending the majority (via Washington Examiner):
The National Republican Congressional Committee raised $7.9 million in July, bringing the committee’s on-hand total to $92.3 million, according to figures first shared with the Washington Examiner.
The monthly total also brings the NRCC to $90.6 million raised for the year, the most ever at the July year-to-date mark, according to the committee. It has raised more than $200 million for the cycle, with 75 days before Election Day, and has $10 million more in the bank than its Democratic counterpart.
“House Republicans are building a war chest. Democrats are building a socialist bailout fund, said NRCC Spokesman Mike Marinella, a brutal line for Democrats who seem addicted to being poor. They can change that easily, however, if they found candidates who aren’t terrorists or absolute crackpots, support public safety, and don’t pal around with proto-Nazis, but that’s not going to happen this cycle.
