Republican Rep. Wesley Hunt, who unsuccessfully ran for the Texas Senate seat, has been named the next United States Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by President Donald Trump.

“Having served in the region both in combat as an Army officer and for two years as a diplomatic liaison in the Kingdom, I understand the strategic importance of the partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia and the profound responsibility of this position,” Hunt said on social media.

“I am deeply grateful to President Trump for his confidence in me,” Hunt continued. “When confirmed, I will serve with humility and honor, advance his vision of peace through strength and deepen this vital partnership.”

Hunt finished in a distant third in the Republican primary for the Texas Senate seat. He had initially been seen as a potential through-line between Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

His nomination has been sent to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for consideration.
