While all eyes were on President Trump at the United Nations General Assembly yesterday, another speech deserves serious attention: that of Argentine President Javier Milei.
His speech was an unapologetic broadside against the U.N. itself. Milei, a man already known for his unwavering commitment to free-market capitalism and his fierce disdain for socialism and collectivism, delivered an eloquent takedown of an institution he argued has done more than lost its way but has encouraged "chaos, violence and international terrorism to flourish." He called the United Nations “useless,” accused it of sustaining “a caste of fatally arrogant parasites,” and charged that it has failed disastrously at the very missions, collective security and human rights, for which it was created.

The UN has "become a useless organization whose only purpose is to sustain a caste of fatally arrogant parasites masquerading as well-intentioned bureaucrats. I would remind them of what Mises said, 'good people do not think about controlling the lives of their fellow human beings.'" Milei said.
"Those who were supposed to guarantee collective security and human rights failed in their task. Instead they allowed chaos, violence and international terrorism to flourish. The alleged defenders of human rights have sheltered bloodthirsty dictatorships and regimes that stone women in the streets," he said. "They have systematically voted against Israel while remaining silent in the face of Islamic terrorism and the genocide of Christians in Africa."
Milei went on to highlight an example close to home: Argentina’s long-running sovereignty dispute with the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, or the Malvinas. Regardless of who is right on the underlying claim, he argued that the U.N.’s response has been characteristically hollow, resolutions, statements, and ultimately no action. Milei accused the body of simply “looking the other way.” As Milei made clear, an organization that prides itself on preserving peace often removes itself from the world’s hardest disputes. And when it does get involved it too often provides diplomatic cover for some of the most bloodthirsty regimes on Earth.
"And as if that were not enough, an organization established to defend the territorial sovereignty of its members decided to look the other way with regard to the situation of the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia Islands, South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas," Milei said.
"For us, the Malvinas are a national cause. I repeat, the Malvinas for us are a national cause. They are also a test of the gulf that can exist between the words of international institutions and the reality upon which they purport to act. 50 years ago this very assembly adopted resolution 3149 which calls on parties to refrain from introducing unilateral modifications while the dispute remains unresolved. 50 years on the situation has not changed yet unilateral modifications continue."
Characteristically, Milei’s speech cut to the heart of what is wrong with the United Nations: it has become a body of virtue signaling, bureaucratic self-preservation, and lofty pronouncements with little to show in the way of results. The central point is simple: an organization cannot claim moral authority when its actions so often amount to empty resolutions and hollow posturing.
