Some socialists have discovered a convenient new defense for enjoying the spoils of capitalism while demanding its destruction.
Grace Ryan, a former organizer for Brad Lander’s congressional campaign and the daughter of the man behind a $10 million chocolate business, took to social media to defend herself, and fellow privileged Democratic Socialists of America members, for preaching redistribution from behind the comfort of family wealth. Her defense was to invoke the phrase "noblesse oblige," a phrase rooted in the idea of voluntary generosity, as proof that she has an obligation to help usher in the golden age of socialism.
It is quite the remarkable argument. Inherit the benefits of the greatest economic system on planet Earth, enjoy the lifestyle it produced, and then insist that the very same system must be forcibly torn apart, for everyone else, of course.

Noblesse oblige, the French phrase meaning “nobility obligates,” is the idea that wealth, privilege, and status come with a moral duty to act generously and responsibly toward those less fortunate. At its core, it is an appeal to individual virtue and free-market principles. That successful people have a (voluntary) duty to give back through charity, philanthropy, mentorship, investment, and service.
But that is apparently not enough for Ryan. In her version, noblesse oblige means helping build a political movement to forcibly confiscate wealth from anyone doing better than someone else, then hand it over to an ever-expanding collection of ineffective and corrupt government programs. Because nothing captures the spirit of voluntary generosity quite like the IRS taking your money under threat of imprisonment.
Little does Ryan seem to realize that America’s clearest example of noblesse oblige came during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the era when the country was most committed to laissez-faire capitalism. It was a period of extraordinary industrial growth and private philanthropy, when figures such as Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller used fortunes created through private enterprise to build libraries, universities, hospitals, research institutions, and charitable foundations.
It demonstrates what socialists routinely refuse to understand. Prosperity is the necessary starting point for generosity. When government treats success as something to be confiscated and punished, it breeds scarcity, resentment, and self-protection. It encourages precisely the hoarding and selfishness they so often accuse the wealthy of practicing. A system that rewards achievement and leaves room for voluntary giving does the opposite. It gives people both the means, and the incentive, to give.
