I can't stop thinking about Nikole Hannah-Jones' incredible confession that she put her politics ahead of her daughter's well-being. My mind simply cannot grasp how a parent could do that. Yes, I know a lot of parents do this, and in far worse ways (i.e. the parents who "transition" their children).
But to me, it's a foreign concept. As political as I am, my children's well-being came first, and I always wanted to provide them with a better life than the one I had growing up. That's not to say my childhood was bad, of course. But I wanted my boys to have opportunities and experiences that I didn't. It's why my eldest went to Rome in 2025 and why his younger brother will be going in March. When I was a child, we couldn't afford such a trip, and my mother never would have let me travel across the globe, even with my school.
The time we have with our children, the time they are children, is limited and finite. I still can't believe my eldest is 19 and living on his own with roommates. He goes to college, works in construction, and is doing so well. But it seems like only yesterday that he was a baby and I had no idea what I was doing with a newborn.
But the point is this: he had one shot to go to Rome for Easter, and then it was gone. I made sure that trip happened because you can't turn back the clock.
The same thing applies to education. You have one shot — one — at forming the skills, habits, and foundation that will shape the rest of your life. So many children lost that during COVID, but Nikole Hannah-Jones literally denied her daughter educational opportunities. Over her political views.
I don't understand why Hannah-Jones chose to publish the story now, but I can speculate, and I think her daughter was going to blow the whistle on this, and Hannah-Jones was trying to get ahead of bad press.
But one would think that Hannah-Jones would have learned something from this.
You would think wrong.

In some ways, I'm not surprised. The Left are the same people who would gladly cut off their daughter's breasts and their son's penis in pursuit of their political agenda. Denying their children a good education seems positively mild in comparison.
Hannah-Jones is what we call a "true believer" — her politics are right, even when they're proven wrong.
Learning her daughter got As without ever knowing anything is an incredible metaphor for Nikole Hannah-Jones' own celebrated career as conspiracy theorist and publisher of gross falsehoods.

I assume she's not self-aware enough to realize this.
Now, if I had put my politics before my children and caused near-irreparable harm, I would spend the rest of my life not only trying to make amends to my child, but also making sure the same thing never happened to another child. Ever.
But instead of becoming an advocate for universal school choice, holding failing public schools accountable, and getting politics out of the classroom, it's clear Hannah-Jones will play the victim here. She will double down on her ideology and make sure more kids suffer the same fate as her daughter, but with even less privilege. Much like her daughter and the students at that failed school, Hannah-Jones has learned nothing.
It's despicable and disappointing, but not surprising.
