What's Going on With California's War on the Paramount Warner Bros. Merger?

Back in June, the Justice Department approved the Paramount deal to buy Warner Bros., a merger that would give David Ellison control over not just Warner Bros. but CNN and HBO Max, too. The merger is happening because Warner Bros. cannot stand on its own anymore, but the Left isn't happy about this. They think Ellison, who has worked with President Trump in the past, will allow some sort of weird MAGA influence over the network.

In July, 12 states moved to block the merger, including California Attorney General Rob Bonta, citing concerns about a "reduction in competition" and the "quality of cinema." Have these people seen James Gunn's "Superman" or Nolan's adaptation of "The Odyssey"? The quality cinema ship sailed a long time ago, hit an iceberg, and sank.

Ellison has told senior execs that Paramount Skydance will relocate out of California starting October 1 unless progress is made towards settling that antitrust lawsuit led by Bonta. That's when a $7 million per day "ticking fee" will be charged to WBD shareholders.

And it looks like Bonta is calling Ellison's bluff, as he just called off a settlement meeting.

Here's more:

There will be no settlement talks meeting Monday between Paramount and a coalition of state attorneys general after all.

“My office was scheduled to meet with Paramount on Monday, August 24th,” California AG Rob Bonta said late late Sunday. “I have pulled down this meeting.”

Bonta canceled the scheduled sit-down after reports of an August 21 meeting with the David Ellison-led company oozed out. More galling to Bonta is that what was discussed at that meeting slipped out into the public sphere. The re-election seeking AG specifically noted: “My office had a meeting with Paramount on Friday. Paramount did not maintain the confidentiality of that meeting.”

“Not only did Paramount leak the alleged substance of settlement discussions, but they misrepresented these discussions, demonstrating a lack of good faith,” the AG said in a statement provided to Deadline in the midnight hour. “As soon as Paramount stops playing games and engages sincerely, my office is happy to meet again.”

This is all because of Ellison's ties to President Trump. They're not worried about a monopoly or the quality of films. They just hate Trump and anyone associated with him.

Those are both toast anyway.

Hollywood overwhelmingly votes for Democrats, and they're going to turn the city into West Detroit.

It's deserved and self-inflicted.

And other states will reap the benefits of Bonta's Trump Derangement Syndrome and California's unfriendly business practices. Tennessee is emerging as a possible spot for Paramount to relocate.

Austin, Texas has also been mentioned as a new home for the studio.

It is insane that they won't let this merger go through.
