How Money Got Free – Bitcoin and The Fight for the Future of Finance

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

If you have ever secretly wondered…what the heck is this Bitcoin thing you keep hearing about? Brian Patrick Eha has written a book for you.

I’ll be honest. I’d been seeing the word “Bitcoin” come around in articles and some friends were “mining” it on Facebook, but in truth I knew nothing about it. From the snippets I caught in the media, it sounded like Bitcoin had something to do with a pretend currency and terrorists were using it.

Thanks to Brian Patrick Eha, I’ve come to find out, there is a whole lot more to it than that. "How Money Got Free" takes you on a journey that starts a lot like the scene in the Matrix movie where you take the “Red Pill” and everything you knew about the world disappears. Eha is like the Morpheus character explaining just how deep the rabbit hole goes. Everything you thought about money is about to change.

He fearlessly delves into the history of Bitcoin and how it came to be positioned to take the world by storm. He describes the progression of digital currency that built over many years. It began in a geek filled basement full of long-haired “Cypherpunks” and dreams of a world ruled by digital cash. These punks imagined a world free from the bondage of a central banking system where something they called “Crypto-anarchy” was king. Crypto-anarchy was basically a dream of a different world that has evolved into what is unfolding before our very eyes.

A world where they would “fundamentally alter the nature of corporations and of government interference in economic transactions…Crypto-anarchy would replace central bureaucracy with decentralized cryptography, government control with individual liberty, the nation-state with the network.”

Could it be? A system that would free money from the bondage of mankind?

The story continues on shrouded in mystery. Even its creator has remained a phantom. Who exactly created Bitcoin?

Eha describes several of the forerunners to digital currency and how each one found its way into failure. The founders usually ended up in prison or complete defeat, their dreams crushed by the powers that be who secretly run the world. Each of those failed attempts paved the way for Bitcoin.

Bitcoin was created by the pseudonym, Satoshi Nakamoto.

It began at 2:16 P.M. EST on November 1st, 2008 when someone named Satoshi Nakamoto introduced it into the world on a cryptographers mailing list. And to say the world has never been the same is dramatic, but accurate. Bitcoin birthed a quantum shift in the financial world that is on the verge of literally changing everything. Absolutely everything about your life and money could be about to change if Bitcoin has its way.

No one knows who NEO, I mean Satoshi is, unless the Department of Homeland Security knows and they aren’t confirming or denying it. Either way, the Bitcoin baby is out of the bottle like the proverbial genie.

Eha explains the tech details about “Blockchain” technology and how and why Bitcoin is so brilliant in its simplicity. I will not attempt to explain Bitcoin in this review. If you want to truly to understand it, I would wholeheartedly suggest you get this book and read the whole thing…very slowly. It’s a meaty read full of back story and vision for what lies ahead.

Satoshi Nakamota, whoever he/she is, has actually created a system that empowers the individual and is a “financial weapon against central banking, against the ability of governments to issue money and regulate their economies.”

The second bit of irony comes as Satoshi dropped his/her Bitcoin wrench into the global finances of the world. “He gave his birthday – among the personal information required to register an account as 5 April 1975: the day in 1933 when President Roosevelt by executive order made it illegal for average American citizens to own gold – a crime punishable by up to ten years in prison – and the year when FDR’s order was finally undone.”

Satoshi obviously enjoys a laugh at history and the bigger picture of such as seismic shift in the financial workings of the world. Bitcoin is undoing what can be seen as the wrongs perpetuated upon money through the ages.

"How Money Got Free" takes you on a journey from its mysterious birth designed to radically change the world through its rocky teenage years led by some very real people who have risked all to push Bitcoin to where it is today…on the cusp of the unknown.

Eha states, “History will decide whether the work of Satoshi Nakamoto, of Hal Finney, Ross Ublricht, Roger Ver, Charlie Shrem, Erik Voorhees, Ira Miller, Gavin Andresen, Nic Cary, Barry Silbert, and countless others who stood beside and followed after them, should be counted among the necessary treasons of our age. For now, the men and women of this new financial frontier have their gazes fixed only on the future. Their work - their war - continues.”

Author Brian Eha writes of these men as if they are ushering in a revolutionary time and these forerunners will be revered in posterity as if our very founders.

After reading this book and learning more about Bitcoin…it’s hard not to wonder if he’s right.
