Trump Takes on the Pope, and the Pope Gets Trumped

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

Let’s call out the blasphemy in the middle of the room right away.

On Easter 2026, President Trump posted on Truth Social a message with cursing, then added: “Praise Allah!” President Trump uses colorful language, and I don’t like it.

So what? I didn’t elect a pastor. I elected a President. I don’t want a chief executive weak in the knees but acts presidential. Trump is getting things done like no one else. He was not praising the false god of Islam, anyway, but mocking the Iranian Ayatollah’s fanatical regime.

Next, let’s dispense with the false and flabby notion that Trump thinks that he’s Jesus.

First, President Trump did not turn himself into an AI version of Christ on April 12, 2026. He simply reposted an AI image that another supporter had created two months ago.

Trump shared it within the timeframe of his tiff with Pope Leo XIV (more on that later), but he did not blaspheme Christ Jesus. In fact, he does not blaspheme our Lord and Savior, since he has done more than any president to restore and promote the Christian faith: inviting pastors and teachers to pray in the White House, setting up religious liberty commissions, ending DOJ lawfare against people of faith, etc. This year, Trump was the first president to formally state the Gospel in his Easter message: “For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son…”

Admittedly, I was initially offended by the picture. Upon closer look, he was clearly showing himself, with his head and hairdo, with a ball of light in his hand, healing someone on the bed. Around him, we can see soldiers, medical care providers, and other public servants.

The more that I pondered that picture, the funnier it got. Trump’s sense of humor reminds me of eerie yet genius comic Andy Kaufman and Vegas roaster Chief Don Rickles. Kauffman played the outlandish lounge lizard, Tony Clifton, with an over-the-top persona. Anyone could tell it was fake and just for laughs! Don Rickles’ insults were so biting and bigoted that he made fun of himself more than roasting friends or celebrities.

Notice also that red robe on his shoulders! Only the Mormon Jesus looks anything like that, and without getting into the theological depths, there’s plenty of justification to mock the Mormon mis-takes on our Lord and Savior!

Besides, if Trump really wanted to make himself out to be Jesus, he would have given himself long hair and a beard. To show his determined refusal to kowtow while offering an olive branch, Trump posted a picture of Jesus hugging him. Happy now, everyone?

Now, let’s talk about what sparked Trump’s decision to post a gag photo of himself as a faith healer: the ongoing arguments across social media with Pope Leo XIV.

Pope Leo has played the pacifist role as Pontiff of the Catholic Church. His remarks, however, that God does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war were not only inappropriate and politically daft, but also outright Biblically false.

Has Pope Leo ever heard of Joshua? The successor to Moses called on the Lord to stop the sun and moon above him, so that the light would stay shining as the Israelites routed their enemies and took the Promised Land in that epic battle. Before that, Moses raised his hands, a prayer-like posture, to ensure the victory for the Israelites against the Amalekites. Brother Aaron and priestly helper Hur held up Moses’ arms when he got tired, too.

They prayed, they warred, they won.

David prayed for victory against the Philistines, and at the end of Days, when the Son of Man comes again, splitting the Mount of Olives with His descent, He will obliterate all the armies of the nations with His Word. That’s a literal prayer wiping out the enemies!

Besides the Scriptures, the Pope shows deep ignorance of papal history. He forgot Julius II, Boniface VIII, and the Crusades. Who can forget the Pope who declared, “In this sign, you shall conquer”? Not just a prayer, but a prayer for military victory, and from the very pope himself!

The Pope is not only wrong, but he stepped out of his role as chief prelate for a major Christian denomination. He’s becoming more liberal with every day, and it’s distressing and disappointing. I had the highest hopes that he would serve as a Pope John Paul II or Pope Benedict XVI reformer who would restore hearty Christian doctrine and strong adherence to Biblical truth. Would he lead the Trad Catholic revolution, inspiring young people across the West, too? Instead, he’s looking, sounding, and acting more like Pope Francis every day. I spoke to one active Catholic conservative in Wisconsin, and he maintains his convictions that the Pope is more moderate, still has a record of supporting nation-states and borders, and remains pro-life and pro-family.

Well …

This Pope just blessed a block of ice. Is he sounding the alarm on the environment? Priorities, please. He’s promoting pro-LGBT bishops. He’s still showcasing transgender. He just had a meeting with Obama’s brain trust David Axelrod (after all, they are both born Chicagoans, right?).

And now he’s telling Trump to seek peace at all costs, while also criticizing Trump’s actions in Venezuela and Iran, while doing nothing about the bishops in Judea-Samaria who show solidarity with the “Palestinian” cause. Trump was right to throw the plight of the Nigerian Christians in the Pope’s face.

Catholic and conservative pundits have faulted Trump for attacking the Pope. They fear these petty attacks could hurt Republicans’ already underdog chances in the 2026 midterms. Trump should avoid any needless offense that could fracture his coalition.

Despite the current spiritual brouhaha, Trump’s leadership results will speak for themselves. Instead of backing down, President Trump should be commended for upbraiding Pope Leo XIV. His remarks are out of line, and Trump has rightly faulted him for saying nothing about the tens of thousands of Iranians (including Christians!) slaughtered by the Ayatollah’s regime. Where is Pope Leo when it comes to the plight of Christians in Nigeria? They are facing a literal genocide at the blood hands of Islamic militants, and Leo is nowhere to be found.

What gives?

On top of that, the Pope is making nice with imams and is praying in mosques. What happened to this latest defender of the faith? Looks like he's interested in defending his PR and making sure he gets accepted to all the globalist kool kids’ parties.

Trump slammed him like the politician that he’s pretending to be, calling him “weak on crime.” Indeed, the rejection of the death penalty is contrary to Biblical precedent and natural law. Where were he and the previous pontiffs when governments were shutting down churches over COVID? He has repeatedly criticized Trump for taking out bad guys like Nicholas Maduro and the Ayatollahs. There is no peace in this world if evil is allowed to persist.

Sadly, it’s shameful for the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church to debase his office by getting into worldly politics. Pope Francis did enough damage with his mixed messages and Marxist undertones. Leo is exacerbating this mess and exposing his Christian office to greater irrelevance.
