The Media Patting Its Own Back Begins Anew

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

The mainstream media is full of itself, as a general rule, but perhaps the most fascinating part is in how they not just don't admit they made mistakes, but manage to turn those mistakes into seeming victories.

For example, we spent four years seeing that we had a potato in the Oval Office. We all saw it when he couldn't find his way off of a stage, or when he had note cards telling him which reporters to call on and what to say, or any of a thousand other things that made it clear that he was as sharp as a baseball bat, and the media denounced anyone calling it out.

He was still sharp, they told us. His staffers can't keep up with him, they said. They ran these claims uncritically, never questioning the narrative, and it wasn't until it was clear for all to see that they started saying anything.

Then the books came out, the news reports aired, and suddenly the media was very proud of itself for uncovering the cover-up over Biden's mental status...that they were a key part of.

This week, they started doing it all over again, this time about Eric Swalwell.

We all know about how horrible he is now, but for more than a decade, it was apparently very well known, and not just by his allies in the Democratic Party, but the media is now coming out and saying they knew all along.

Still, you see, they're the champions. Brian Stelter says that Swalwell's downfall was a testament to investigative journalism, for example, all while ignoring his colleagues who are defending their refusal to write about it as "not my beat," despite claiming to have known for years.

In every case, they're the victors, because they figure they write the history books.

They'll continue to gaslight the American people into believing that they took down Swalwell. They'll ignore how no one would come forward, despite CNN implying its knowledge of Swalwell's activities back in 2017, and pretend they're the heroes of this story at a time when Swalwell was set to leave Congress and become governor of the largest state in the nation by population.

There doesn't seem to be much curiosity about why now, though. Not among the media elite, who are patting themselves on the back for taking down a well-known Democrat. This will, undoubtedly, be trotted out for years to come whenever their own biases are targeted, but we also all know that this started on social media, where we could all see it, and they couldn't ignore it indefinitely, even if they wanted to. Since Swalwell wasn't the party's pick to replace Gavin Newsom, it was easy for them to pick up the breadcrumbs and pretend they've accomplished something.

They'll celebrate it as one of their many victories, all while pretending they weren't part of this cover-up, either.

They knew about Swalwell for years. Who else do they know about and are covering up? What other monsters have people elected without knowing exactly what kind of disgusting excuses for human beings they actually are, all while the media knows and just shrugs it off because it's "not my beat" or something equally stupid?

I'll promise you one thing. None of them is a Republican.

If they were, we'd already know about it.
