As Israel Goes, So Goes America

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

There is a vocal group of Americans who would love to see Israel go poof. They don’t realize that should that happen, America will be next.

I’ve had some interesting jobs in my life. I briefly worked for a company based on the invention of a brilliant physicist. He made glass capillaries with a diameter smaller than the wavelength of light. There are all kinds of unique physical outcomes due to light moving in a pipe with such a small diameter. He managed to set up four different companies, each using the technology for a different application. I worked for a time at the one that used his special capillaries in the field of semiconductor manufacture. Oftentimes, when doing lithography, some extra metal lands on a point on the mask where it should not be. If one cannot remove this metal, then the mask is worthless—though it costs a fortune to produce it. The goal of the company was to “ablate” the metal with laser light sent down one of these very small pipes. I don’t know if they ever succeeded. When I was there, either the energy was too little to remove the metal, or if it did get rid of it, it also made a divot in the glass—and permanently ruined it. They could not find a middle setting—one that was strong enough to remove the excess metal but not so strong as to damage the glass.

I was reminded of this company when I thought about the class of antisemites who say that the U.S. gets nothing from Israel. In their ideal scenario, Israel is destroyed. Whether Iran obliterates the Jewish state or it is run over by Hamas terrorists, they don’t care. They always blame Israel for everything—Epstein, the death of Charlie Kirk, Christian suffering in the Middle East, etc. Even when all facts point elsewhere, they cannot stop screaming, “Genocide!” or “Starvation!” What these obsessive Jew haters do not fathom is that Israel is the canary in the coal mine. If Israel falls as a liberal democratic state, Europe and the U.S. will be next. Their desire for Israel to disappear will not make their world better; rather, it will lead to its destruction.

The Muslims imported into Europe are not shy about stating their hatred for Jews and Israel. They also are not very shy about saying how much they hate their new hosts and the permissive countries where they chose to land. They never express thanks for being given the opportunity to live in war-free countries or benefit from the material wealth or social freedoms of Western civilization. And while they would celebrate for a few days the end of the state of Israel, they would not take very long to express their plans to do the same to their hosts. If it worked against Israel, it will work against the Americans. When Ariel Sharon and Ehud Olmert dragged the Jews out of Gaza, they said that their goal was to say, “We did our part for peace, now leave us alone.” Olmert expected a 20-year peace push lull for clearing out Gaza. Instead, as the last Jews were being forcibly removed from their homes, Kofi Annan gravely stated, “This is the first of many more removals of Jews from Palestinian lands.” Whatever you give them, they are not satisfied; they will always demand more. The fall of Israel may please Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens, but the same Muslims will be measuring the drapes of their homes as well.

The situation is somewhat like the fall of France. England sent significant forces in order to stop the Germans in their push West. But the forces were too little and too late. The breakout from the Ardennes caught everyone by surprise, just as Hitler predicted. The famous and miraculous retrieval of 338,000 troops from Dunkirk implied that England would be next. Operation Sea Lion was meant to bring German soldiers from France to conquer England. The failure of the Luftwaffe to defeat the RAF during the brutal Battle of Britain made the planned amphibious assault on the British untenable. Hitler turned his attention to the Soviet Union and left England free to continue the war. If the “anti-Zionists” get their way, Israel would fall. I don’t believe that there would be a Palestinian state for more than an hour. The neighboring Arab countries would cross into the former Israel in order to capture Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa, and Tiberias. The Palestinians would quickly be forgotten, as they had outlived their service in getting rid of the Jews, and no one would care how the Egyptians, Jordanians, or Syrians treat the former darlings of the Left. As they always have, they would treat them like dirt.

So, those who hate the Jews and pin it on “the Zionists” should be supporting Israel only so that Islam does not come to conquer them. But then we see a very strange phenomenon: we see many former darlings of the Right visiting Qatar and other Muslim countries and speaking warmly about the religion that allows one to beat his wife and throw gays off of tall buildings. Qatar is an evil country, but it knows how to get its dollar’s worth. If there is fear of an Islamic takeover, then one might be forced to support Israel or at least keep quiet for reasons of self-preservation: if Israel goes, we’re next. But if one thinks that Islam and Sharia are cool, then who cares if the new guys on the block take over? King Charles opened a new Islamic center at Oxford and asked his subjects to be good to the new Muslim invaders. If one is not upset about either being forced to convert to Islam or being left as a second-class citizen subject to strict Sharia law, then who cares if Israel goes, and for that matter, the U.K., France, or the U.S.?

One does not have to love Israel. One can list numerous legitimate faults with the country and its leadership. But just as removing key weight-bearing beams in your house will cause the whole structure to collapse, should Israel fall to Iran or its proxies, the West will be destroyed in a similar manner. So independent of Israel contributing a lot to the U.S. by way of technology, military experience, and research centers for many Fortune 100 companies, its existence weakens the very Islamic forces that wish to subjugate the West. Iran has missiles that can reach Europe, and it refuses to commit to no nukes or keeping its missiles from being able to attack the U.S. Qatar has dropped billions on U.S. education institutions in order to neuter any anti-Islamic beliefs and slowly get people into Islam—like Tucker Carlson, who wants to buy a place in Qatar. Sharia Islam is completely incompatible with Western freedoms; those who push for its acceptance are writing the obituary of the West as we have always known it—and as it has been known for hundreds of years.

What’s the fastest way to determine that Jew hatred is behind supposed criticisms of Israel? When the accusations are lies. Tucker Carlson claimed that Israel killed tens of thousands of Palestinian children. Hamas recently said that it will give money to 50,000 widows of their fighters—out of a total of 70,000 killed in the Gaza War. He said that Israel mistreats Christians living in the country, while it is the only place in the region where the number of Christians is growing. Nobody has to love Israel, but everybody should realize that it is the last defense before the West is completely lost.
