It’s Time to End ICE Enforcement in Blue States

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

The divide between red and blue has never been more stark than in how each side deals with immigration enforcement in their respective jurisdictions. In a red state, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has not just free rein to operate as needed to find and remove illegal aliens, but the cooperation and assistance of state and (often) local law enforcement. Consequently, things go smoothly and the job gets done. No muss, no fuss. In many blue states, however, the lack of state and local cooperation, combined with seemingly endless violent protests from leftist agitators, has made it difficult to nearly impossible for ICE to do its job effectively. It has also, at least in part, led to the kind of chaos that creates the fog of war tragedies that give the left fodder in the PR battle. Which is obviously what they want.

As always seems to be the case with these things, probably due to its heavy concentration of crazy wild-eyed blue-haired white leftists combined with shadowy Soros-aligned groups sending paid ‘protestors’ there en masse, Minneapolis, Minnesota, is ground zero of the ‘resistance’ against ICE efforts. It’s where violent confrontational protests have sparked multiple FAFO moments that the establishment media twists to manipulate public opinion against internal immigration enforcement. Obviously, anybody with an ounce of common sense knows it’s all part of the plan.

President Donald Trump has threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act in response, an extraordinary step not used since the LA riots of former President George H.W. Bush’s term, that would allow him to utilize the U.S. military to quell the riots and bring order to the city. And most people on our side of the political aisle tend to agree, including a large part of me. We all know that if right-wingers were doing anything close to this, then each and every instigator would be hunted down like dogs and put under the jail. Yet, leftists are allowed to destroy property and violently assault federal agents seemingly, for the most part, with zero accountability.

One way or another, something has to give. And I’m actually OK with either using the Insurrection Act to clamp down and restore order and, well, another extreme but opposite measure that keeps running through my mind: stopping ICE enforcement entirely in Minnesota and other blue states.

I know what you're thinking and believe me, I get it, but at least hear me out. What if we just give these morons exactly what they want? And by “what they want,” I mean as many illegal aliens and as much illegal alien crime and welfare use and strains on infrastructure and medical systems as one could possibly imagine. What if ICE just up and pulled entirely out of all blue states that request it? What if Trump and the Department of Homeland Security just said, “You won't work with us? Fine, have it your way. Now, enjoy the bed you’ve made for yourself.”

What would happen? Illegals, including the criminals, traffickers and gang bangers, would make their way to all the leftist enclaves by the hundreds of thousands if not the millions. It would be sanctuary cities on steroids, equivalent to GOP governors shipping incoming illegals to Martha's Vineyard, except on a nuclear level. The migrant crisis, except to all the right places instead of just one, the places just begging, apparently, for as many ‘brown’ people as possible.

There would have to be some caveats, though. States that refuse to back federal immigration enforcement should, at the very least, lose federal funding for welfare and healthcare. I’m sure it’s no biggie. They love migrants so much that less federal money for their own people, most of whom are probably white anyway, shouldn’t be an issue for those do-gooders, right? Oh, and any illegal immigrant caught outside those states for any reason whatsoever receives at least a five-year prison term followed by a one-way ticket back to their home country, never to be again allowed reentry.

The status quo isn’t great, even if Trump used the Insurrection Act. For one, clamping down would cost us dearly politically, more so than ICE actions and the unfortunate FAFO events already have. For another, aggressive federal action in states that resist their mandates can become a 10th Amendment issue that can easily be used against us. Imagine a scenario where a Democratic administration enacts a gun ban and federal agents go door to door in red areas to enforce it. Then, it would (hopefully) be conservatives on the streets trying to rein in the feds. If we invoke the Insurrection Act against them now, even if justified (and it would be), you know good and well they will do it against us, justified or not. It doesn’t mean we shouldn't, but it does mean there will likely be consequences.

Ending ICE enforcement in blue areas has problems of its own, I’ll readily admit. Birthright citizenship is an issue, although maybe Democrats would consider trading it for letting internal immigration enforcement in their areas go (no, they wouldn’t be allowed to accept new migrants from foreign countries). The census count is another, since illegals are counted for representation and such. Even so, always remember that there are no perfect solutions here, only trade-offs.

I’m going to take credit for being one of the first to propose this idea, although to a very limited audience. Since then, others have come to the same conclusion, most notably Megyn Kelly, who posted a viral tweet suggesting ICE end enforcement in Minnesota and encourage all illegals to move there. The best part would not just be an end to the negative PR the left has managed to create and utilize to their own benefit, but also the ability to find out how the left handles having to live with the real-life consequences of the utopia they seek to create. They love these criminal migrants so much - they can have all of them.
