While Democrats were busy hustling President Joe Biden out the door, the Biden-Harris Administration swore in their green shirt army. Now, with the nation’s attention focused on the fireworks in Chicago, Kamala Harris is using the taxpayer dime to stock her political campaign with paid activists. In an election expected to go down to the wire, the implications are massive.
Here's the back story: in September 2023, the Biden-Harris Administration announced the creation of the American Climate Corps (ACC,) unilaterally bypassing Congress to establish a purported transformative initiative to combat climate change. Fast forward, 9,000 volunteers are already sworn into service under this program. It is all designed to invoke nostalgia for the Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps of a century ago. But unlike its predecessor, the American Climate Corps raises significant questions about its true purpose—whether it serves the taxpayers or simply advances Harris’ political ambitions.
From the outset, the American Climate Corps has been shrouded in ambiguity and political posturing. The job titles advertised on its website, such as "Climate Fellow" or "Climate Resiliency Fellow," are vague. These positions, many of which are conveniently located on college campuses, appear more focused on mobilizing volunteers than on tangible environmental work. One particularly concerning job description even includes "volunteer mobilization," a term that could easily be interpreted as political organizing rather than public service.
Harris has been one of the program’s most vocal supporters since its inception. When the White House announced the initiative, they made a point of branding it as the work of the "Biden-Harris Administration," signaling the Vice President’s deep connection to the project. As one of the original sponsors of the Green New Deal and someone who supports banning red meat in the name of climate, her association should come as no surprise.
The timing of the program’s expansion is also suspect. Just days after President Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race, the first batch of volunteers were sworn into the Climate Corps, leading many to wonder whether this is a calculated move to bolster Harris's campaign under the guise of civil action.
Indeed, the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Accountability launched an investigation into the American Climate Corps, but so far, they’ve been stonewalled by the Administration. The obstruction is eerily similar to Harris’s ongoing reluctance to engage in substantive interviews or answer tough questions. The lack of transparency surrounding the program only deepens suspicions that the American Climate Corps is less about serving the taxpayers and more about building a political machine for Harris.
One of the most troubling aspects of this program is the oath that new members must recite upon joining. Just a sample:
“I pledge to bring my skills, respect, and compassion to work every day, supporting environmental justice in all our communities…”
“…I will take my place in history, working with shared purpose in the American Climate Corps on behalf of our nation and planet, its people, and all its species, for the better future we hold within our sight.”
Unlike traditional oaths of office, which pledge allegiance to the United States and its Constitution, the American Climate Corps oath is focused on an eerie commitment to "environmental justice." This language veers into Orwellian territory, raising concerns about where these volunteers' true loyalties lie. Are they serving the American people, or are they being groomed to serve a political agenda?
As the Democratic National Convention unfolds this week, expect plenty of coverage on the party’s internal divisions. But while the media focuses on the discord, Kamala Harris may already have her loyal delegation in place, thanks to the American Climate Corps. And membership has its benefits.
Fun Fact: In addition to a paycheck, certain American Climate Corps jobs include a $10,000 bonus “education award” along with a relocation funds and “food and childcare” if needed. All on your dime.
The American Climate Corps represents a troubling intersection of activism and political opportunism.
Without approval or accountability to Congress, Kamala Harris has created a backdoor effort to advance a political campaign. She now has thousands of volunteers on the taxpayer’s payroll who all know they will have to go back to glueing themselves to highways if Donald Trump wins in November. Their gravy train hangs in the balance.
