During his successful run for the presidency in 1992, Bill Clinton's campaign manager, James Carville, derived a clever slogan, “It's the economy, stupid.” He determined, and Clinton agreed, that the economy was the most important issue confronting the populace.
One could talk about foreign policy and various other issues in 1992, but what keenly mattered to voters across the country was whether or not they felt as if their wages kept pace with prices and if their futures would look more promising with this candidate or that.
Clinton used this sticky phrase to great effect on the campaign trail and elsewhere. Given that third-party candidate, billionaire Ross Perot siphoned off 19 million votes, largely from George H.W. Bush, the 46-year-old Bill Clinton and his ‘charming’ wife made their way to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C. Unfortunately, they stayed way too long, but that’s another story.
The Economy, 32 Years Later
Those on the Right are aware of the many ways in which Biden and company, to deflect from the economy, seek to persecute and prosecute its opposition. A variety of sham indictments, most coming 30 months after they logically might have been initiated, all but confirms that Biden seeks to stifle democracy by removing people's rights to vote for the candidate of their choice.
Ironically for the Left, following each of these indictments and the ridiculous courtroom machinations, Donald Trump's poll numbers continue to rise. This means that the mainstream press has diminishing influence. Greater and greater numbers of people, even those on the Left, no longer believe that our mainstream media has credibility. The so-called “fourth estate” has figuratively shot itself in the foot. Massive layoffs within the industry have resulted.
Among multi-millions of voters the dominating issue going forward in 2024 is the border and economy. Until their dying days, Joe Biden and his advisors can proclaim that the economy is strong, the administration has “built back better,” and Americans are flexing their financial muscles. The stark reality will continue to plague Biden.
Shock Walk
For the typical consumer, a walk through the supermarket is shocking. Beyond grocery products, the cost of higher-priced goods elsewhere, such as appliances, vehicles, and housing, is heading off the charts. Fewer and fewer people can afford to buy a new house, and renters are having a more difficult time than ever before.
Dangerously low consumer confidence doesn't sound like a strategic measure, but it scopes out how confident people feel about their future finances. Will their wages keep pace with inflation? Will they be able to afford what they need? Does the government have a handle on how to steer the economy?
Biden administration officials can offer falsehoods about Trump, the southern border, foreign relations, child indoctrination, the deficit, and more. They cannot alter the experience and perceptions of multi-millions of Americans who have witnessed that inflation is completely out of control.
The major news networks can avoid or spin the topic, which still won't help the Biden administration. Karine Jean-Pierre can appear even more dazed and confused than usual, if that’s possible, and continue to utter complete nonsense. Still, her words won't change the average Joe’s or Josephine's assessment of how our economy is faring and whether they can meet their living expenses.
Traditionally, a Lock for the Challenger
In any previous era, the horrendous economy would mean that the Republican candidate, Trump or not, would be assured of victory. The Democrats’ campaign to retain the White House by any means necessary, however, will be in full force.
They will create diversions. They will seek or create another George Floyd incident to divide the country and anger Black Americans. They will conjure more false claims against Trump. They will find new ways to increase their fraudulent vote totals and make the schemes in 2020 look like child’s play.
Concurrently, with any semblance of fairness in the forthcoming election, Joe Biden, or whoever is still standing, does not have a chance, be it Gavin Newsom, the rumors of Michelle Obama, or someone else.
Given the Democrats’ woeful record of the last three years and the prospects of them doing even worse in the coming 12 months, they’d have no chance in a normal year.
