‘Liberation Day’ Evens the Playing Field, but Targeted Approach Is Needed to Win Trade War With China

On what he called “Liberation Day,” President Trump declared economic independence from the globalist regime that has bled the American worker dry. With one signature, he sent a message heard worldwide: the era of American submission is over.

President Trump’s historic “Liberation Day” efforts, representing the moment when America was freed from being perpetually ripped off by other nations, are off to a great start as countries are already folding and offering more favorable trade terms for Americans.

Australia has indicated that it is willing to come to the table and negotiate with Trump to remove tariffs. Britain made it clear they would work on a favorable “prosperity deal” with the U.S. to alleviate the tariff burden. Israel also preemptively announced they would be lifting all tariffs on U.S. goods to be spared from Trump’s wrath.

Trump is achieving in real time what patriots have demanded for years because of his boldness and willingness to use the government power at his disposal. He is upending the globalist status quo in trade that has harmed the American worker. Trump is forcing changes in the system that has eroded American sovereignty and prosperity by design.

Status quo-driven economists may kick and scream, and Sen. Rand Paul may throw a libertarian hissy fit. Still, Trump is shattering the grand illusion of free trade that has hollowed out America and made us subservient to other nations. His policies are a breath of fresh air to the men and women of America’s rust belt who put Trump into office for this very reason and show how Trump has remade the Republican Party into a populist force.

Although Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs are a massive step forward to fair, equitable trade, nations such as China will always hold certain inherent advantages in the marketplace over the U.S. due to their lack of scruples. Even with the tariffs, China will continue to subsidize their industries with cheap labor, state funding, and horrendous environmental standards. The U.S., with its first-world protections and humane rules, cannot match China's raw economic output under these conditions.

What would bring China to heel is a tariff designed to punish them for their anti-worker and anti-environmental economic policies. China’s competitive edge comes from its status as the world’s preeminent polluter. As President Trump put it during his Liberation Day speech, “They were absolutely filthy... they created filthy pollution havens.” He added, “They manipulated their currencies, subsidized their exports, stole our intellectual property... and then they always came to us, and they said, we're violating, we should pay for it.” Punishing China for its irresponsible practices and putting a cost on its polluting ability is the only way to create an even playing field in the global marketplace. This is why a pollution tariff is the answer, and a bill is active in Congress to put this crucial policy into place.

Unlike ordinary tariffs, pollution tariffs target a deeper problem: moral bankruptcy. China wins by poisoning rivers, choking cities with smog, and undercutting ethical competitors. That’s not capitalism — it’s exploitation.

Senate Republicans have introduced “The Foreign Pollution Fee Act” to achieve the goal of permanent pollution tariffs on China. The legislation is designed to reduce worker exploitation, fix the supply chain, boost U.S. manufacturing, isolate China from Western nations, and incentivize the expansion of clean manufacturing.

Pollution tariff legislation is gaining mainstream support within the Trump administration. Cabinet members, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, voiced their interest in pollution tariffs during their confirmation hearings. This week, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick discussed China’s unfair pollution on Fox News.

A pollution tariff against China is bolstered with widespread support among the American people. According to a survey conducted by Public Opinion Strategies in Dec. 2024, 80 percent of Republicans believe China’s weak pollution policies give them a competitive edge in the marketplace. The same data shows that Republicans support a pollution tariff to equal the playing field with China by a stunning 90 percent margin. Firm majorities of independents and moderates also support the measure, showing pollution tariffs are a rare unifying issue in the age of political partisanship and division.

“Liberation Day” did not just rebalance trade; it reignited the spirit of American self-determination. By linking environmental policy with economic justice, President Trump has revealed the truth globalists tried to hide: dirty industries abroad mean lost jobs at home. Pollution tariffs are not just tariffs — they’re a moral stand against the filth, fraud, and exploitation that have enriched our enemies at our expense.

China may eventually drop their tariffs, hoping that it will get the Trump administration off their backs so that they can continue to exploit the marketplace unabated. This cannot be allowed to happen. Until China is punished specifically for its pollution, the U.S. will always be disadvantaged. Pollution tariffs are the layup that must be pursued by Republicans – a measure that is as environmentally sound as it is economically sound. They are a reform that will put China’s apologists in the Republican and Democrat parties on the defensive and expose them in the eyes of the public. Enacting pollution tariffs should be among the GOP’s top priorities to effectuate the MAGA agenda.
