A Time For Resolve, Not Sunshine Patriotism

Many conservative Americans look at their country now and no longer recognize it.

That is due, in particular, to the implementation over the past one hundred plus years of a Progressive Left agenda that has been steadily transforming this country into something other than what our Founding Fathers had envisioned.

The implementation of that agenda has been placed into high gear these past several years by the Obama administration.

For many Americans, trust in the federal government is at a minimum, if any trust still exists.

They see a federal government that has skyrocketed our national debt, fails to protect our borders, and advances policies that have stagnated our economy with no end in sight.

They see a president who ignores the Constitution and divides us rather than unites us.

They see a Supreme Court majority that appears, at times, to base its decisions on politics and not on Constitutional principles.

They see federal agencies that are assaulting religious freedoms and targeting conservative groups whose views are contrary to those of the Administration.

The list, unfortunately, goes on.

With the sad state of affairs in our country, it is easy to throw up your hands, do nothing, and let events continue on the current course setting.

That is what the Progressive Left wants to happen.

They want no opposition as they advance policies on a national level that, for example, contributed to the transformation of Detroit from a thriving metropolis into a depressed shell of its former self.

Conservatives, however, are resolute people. We understand that the values and principles on which our nation were founded are sound and worth fighting for.

We are not going to toss in the towel simply because things are not going our way at this point in time.

We understand that a limited federal government that allows and supports the exercise of our God-given unalienable rights is what led this country to greatness at breakneck speed.

We can take a lesson from our Founders and the Americans who supported them. They faced significant oppression at the hands of the British Crown, but they never gave up their quest to achieve freedom.

Even during their darkest days they understood, as Thomas Paine explained in 1776, that their fight for freedom would be long, but well worth the effort:

These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as freedom should not be highly rated. . . .

We at the American Center for Law & Justice (ACLJ) are not backing down from the fight to preserve our Constitutional freedoms.

The battle will be extensive, especially with regard to the protection of religious liberties, but it is one we need to fight and one we cannot lose—for ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren.
