Iran: "New generation of centrifuges is being built"

Sen. Bob Menendez: "only reason…nuclear weapons."

Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of Iran's nuclear program boasted on Thursday that, "The new generation of centrifuges is being built." So much for putting the wraps on Tehran's nuke program as John Kerry's Geneva agreement was supposed to have accomplished.

Salehi's revelation published in the Tehran Times set off a new round of concern from even leading Democrats on Capitol Hill and increased pressure for tougher sanctions on the Iranian regime. The Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Bob Menendez (D-NJ), normally an Obama loyalist, said the "Iranians are showing their true intentions."

"If you're talking about producing more advanced centrifuges that are only used to enrich uranium at a quicker rate…the only purposes of that and the only reason you won't give us access to [a military research facility] is because you're not thinking about nuclear power for domestic energy – you're thinking about nuclear power for nuclear weapons," Menendez said. Menendez and Mark Kirk (R-IL) are sponsors of new sanctions legislation introduced in the Senate that already has 47 co-sponsors.
