Sen. Mitch McConnell’s team has announced that he has finally been discharged from his rehabilitation center and has returned home after an extended absence from the public eye due to a major health issue.

“Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home,” McConnell said in a statement. “Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists and hospital staff.”

McConnell further announced that he will not be returning to work until after the August recess at the soonest, stating that he will “maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home” but will “continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business.”

McConnell’s medical leave of absence has totaled nearly two months in length after he suffered a suspected heart attack. In that time, his team has only released two photos of the aging senator as proof-of-life after extended periods of radio silence.

McConnell intends to serve the remainder of his term in the 119th Congress, which will last another five months until January 3. Andy Barr has received the Republican nomination in the race to replace the longtime GOP leader.
